Historic day for St Pat’s as it prepares to welcome girls

Historic changes are afoot at St Patrick’s Primary School, Lombard Street, Galway, as for the first time in its illustrious history the school is now enrolling girls. Traditionally St Pat’s enrolled boys only from second to sixth class, but is embracing changes to respond to the rapidly evolving needs of education in a modern, cosmopolitan, city. This includes the introduction of infant and junior classes.

After the enthusiastic reception at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel on June 23 1919, Eamon de Valera was deluged with invitations. For the next 18 months he kept the cause of Ireland before the American public. Criss-crossing the country he addressed public meetings, and state legislatures, receiving on the way a plethora of honorary doctorates, including being adopted as a chief of the Indian Chippewa nation. I'm at this job most of my life, I had a fish shop in Ballina which I retired from many years ago, I was fed up doing nothing so I decided to go on the road around the country selling seaweed and I've never looked back since. Its great for my mental health, I come to Galway every Friday to the Moycullen market, make a few bob selling the ol dillisk which comes from Achill Island and make new friends along the way.
