SuperSubs Food for Life

Thu, Aug 31, 2017

It is tough being a modern man, woman, or young person. Twenty first century life moves at a frenetic pace. It is unrecognisable from the pace of life that existed a generation ago. We communicate and consume in completely different ways. In the pre-mobile phone era, we all knew training was on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm and that the game was on after Mass on Sunday. We all knew instinctively that lifts would be available if required, and knew exactly who was going in what cars. A lot of things were pre-planned because they had to be. This included meal time. A striking feature of modern times is that an increasing amount of meal times are classed as meals-on-the-go. The challenge here is to strike a balance between a busy, active lifestyle and getting the necessary nutrition on board that helps to sustain it.

The Food for Life Range from SuperSubs does just that. The range includes a selection of soups, subs, and salad boxes. Did you ever wonder what the benefits of vine tomatoes were? Or how having a good night’s sleep helps your work life balance? What do magnesium and omega 3 do to help you with your daily routine, or what are the most natural ways of getting anti-oxidants or anti-inflammatories into your daily food intake? The Food for Life range shows that it possible to do so using a balanced mix of light subs, soups, and salads. SuperSubs has recently teamed up with nutritionist Sinéad Bradbury to try and increase awareness of the importance of a healthy body to a healthy mind and, more importantly, how can you get all these vital ingredients for a healthy lifestyle into a busy daily routine where food on the move is playing a bigger part in how we consume our meals throughout the day. SuperSubs is available in selected Supermac's throughout Galway and the Food for Life range is proving to be a popular addition to the variety of choice that the group of family restaurants provides.

Does sleep position matter?

Thu, Aug 31, 2017

We spend on average six to eight hours in bed every night. In this time, the position of our body can affect how we feel throughout the day. Just as we need to maintain good posture during the day when sitting and standing, we need to use good posture when sleeping.

There are three main sleeping postures with variations of each — side sleeping, on your back, and on your stomach.

Spruce up your garden with Colourfence — the ultimate garden fence

Thu, Aug 31, 2017

The holy grail of fencing is transforming gardens across the UK and Ireland. It may do "exactly what it says on the tin" but let's face it, treating a timber fence can never be called fun.

In fact owning a timber fence is not much fun either with costly, time consuming, maintenance and repairs almost every year. The alternative to timber fencing, that goes up and stays up, Colourfence fencing solutions are made from innovative Colourbond steel. This fencing is virtually maintenance free — just give it an occasional wash down with water to keep it looking as good as new, so you never need to pick up that paintbrush again.

Open assessment day at Shark Swimming Club

Thu, Aug 31, 2017

Shark Swimming Club Galway is celebrating more than 40 years promoting and encouraging competitive, recreational, and enjoyable swimming. As a non-profit, volunteer-led, competitive swimming club, it is great to see how the club has grown and developed over the years. While it has seen many changes it has retained its strong ethos of encouraging competitive swimming, as evident by the many swimmers who have grown up and are now sending their own children to the club. Indeed some swimmers have come back and are part of the excellent coaching team

Swimmers from around seven years upwards, who know the fundamentals of swimming, can join Shark Swimming Club. They will then progress through the various competitive swimming levels with many achieving success at national level, and some Shark swimmers continuing to represent the club even through college. If you are not sure what level you are or are looking for a club that will coach you to be the best you can be, go along to Shark Swimming Club’s open assessment day on Saturday September 2 in Leisureland, commencing at 6pm sharp – for free. The club has limited places available in various levels. Further details are available from [email protected].

Galway hurlers, the 1950 team

Thu, Aug 31, 2017

Galway featured in the first All-Ireland hurling final in 1887 when they were beaten by Tipperary. Their first victory in a final came in 1924 when they won the 1923 decider. They played that day in blue and gold colours. They were known on other occasions to tog out in black and amber jerseys. In the 1930s the GAA decided that each county should adopt its own colours, and as UCG had won the Sigerson that year, and their captain was on the County senior team, it was decided that Galway would play from then on in maroon and white, the colours of UCG.

Two poets bring their unhappiness to Cleggan

Thu, Aug 31, 2017

Week III
The tragic early suicide of the poet Sylvia Plath was to haunt Richard Murphy - who turned down her request to remain with him at Clegan after she was abandoned by her husband Ted Hughes. Murphy, conscious that he was a stranger in a rural society that still very much represented a Catholic ethos, and which had accepted and befriended him, would, he feared, be unforgiven if a married woman lived in his house. Of course had he known the depth of her despair, that would drive her to suicide a few months later, he would have relented. But when he realised that Hughes had walked out on her, he panicked. He said that it would be better if she went too. As he watched her get into a car to be driven to Dublin, he felt mean, and partly to blame for her misery.
