An account book of the Dominicans in the Claddagh 1727-1738

Thu, Apr 02, 2020

In 1698, the Dominican Community in the Claddagh were dispersed and exiled under a general exile of religious orders but within a few years, three of the friars had returned. It was the time of the Penal Laws, but gradually the pressure on these fathers eased, thanks largely to the refusal of the mayor and sheriffs to implement the anti-Catholic mandate of the English government. The priests were back in the Claddagh, tolerated by the officials.

Irish Kidney Association appeals for digital donations as annual fundraiser is postponed

Thu, Apr 02, 2020

The Galway branch of Irish Kidney Association’s largest annual fundraiser is the sale of forget-me-nots during Organ Donor Awareness Week, when volunteers take to the streets of Galway city and county. With the event now postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisation is asking people to donate online.

Eoin Madden, chair of the Galway branch, has appealed to people to support the IKA's vital work. “This year obviously the sale of forget-me-nots is another casualty of the Covid-19 crisis," he said. "However our vital work promoting organ donation, and supporting patients, must continue. So we are appealing to the public to donate via our Galway IKA Facebook page or by texting the word Kidney to 50300. Sending the text will donate €4 from your account to Irish Kidney Association.”

Thu, Apr 02, 2020

It seems incredible to believe but it is only three short weeks since the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar stood on the steps of Blair House in Washington and announced that all schools would be closing later that day. For parents who have been supporting their sons' and daughters' continuation of education over those 21 days it seems like an eternity.

For many families who have struggled to cope with maintaining a structure of learning over those three weeks, the support of their children’s teachers online has been central to the daily routine of ongoing learning.

Use this time to spring clean your body

Thu, Apr 02, 2020

During stressful times it is easy to reach for treats like crisps and chocolate to feel good and self soothe. But don’t be tempted to fill your body with only comfort food. In the long term, it causes more harm than good. Eating lots of fried food such as chips, sugary food such as biscuits, bread and pasta in large amounts, or drinking alcohol in excess will damage the liver and slow the metabolism, leading to weight gain, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and even diabetes and osteoporosis.

Smiles needed? Call the Songbirds!

Wed, Apr 01, 2020

I can’t imagine my garden without birds, and I love each and every one of them, from the perky robins who perch a few feet away and eye you up speculatively, to the pair of collared doves that land together every so often, exchange a few mildly puzzled coos and lumber off again, looking confused. By encouraging birds of all kinds into the garden, you’re giving it the best possible chance of being a healthy, balanced ecosystem – they may come for the food you’ve left out, but they’ll stay to hoover up greenfly, slugs and lots of other garden ‘pests’ that have designs on your plants.

Claddagh fishermen

Thu, Mar 26, 2020

When the Claddagh fishermen worked, they did it with a will, and when not fishing, they were generally found mending their nets. They had the reputation of being so well prepared for sea, that lives were seldom lost when they went fishing. The strand often presented a lively sight at The Claddagh preparatory to the men proceeding to sea. They usually brought with them some oatmeal cakes, potatoes, water, and firing, no spirits of any kind.
