The Connemara Greenway, which one TD said had the potential to be “a jewel in Ireland’s crown in terms of greenways”, took a step closer to completion this week, with an allocation of €500,000 for its Clifden and Oughterard section.

Additional government funding of €500,000 has been approved for the Clifden and Oughterard section of the Greenway, to allow for the old railway route to be upgraded for walkers, runners and cyclists.

An important collection of letters from the mid-1920s concerning the Irish-language writer Pádraic Ó Conaire has been kindly donated to Galway City Museum by the Galway Technical Institute on the ninetieth anniversary of the author’s death. The letters relate to Ó Conaire’s time as an Irish language teacher at Galway Technical Institute (GTI), then situated on Dominick Street.

Galwaywoman helps Irish greyhound get new life in Austrian monastery

An Irish greyhound is now living a heavenly life in Europe after being adopted by a priest in an Austrian monastery.

Ballinveala Dudu, now known as Dudu to his new owners, was rehomed by the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust (IRGT) to Germany in September. The dog was then adopted by the priest in the small town of Bregenz, in western Austria, last month.

Cancer Care West supports record number of people from the west and northwest of Ireland in 2017

The West of Ireland’s largest cancer care support organisation, Cancer Care West, has reported that demands for the services it provides across a seven county region stretching from Donegal to Clare reached “an all-time high”, last year.

Cancer Care West launched its annual report recently as the charity reported a significant increase in demand for all of its services in 2017. Over 3,000 people accessed the charity’s residential, long term accommodation and cancer support services, an increase of over 14 per cent on the previous year. Cancer Care West attributes this increase in demand to the rise in the number of people receiving a cancer diagnosis and an expansion to the range and reach of the services being provided by the charity.
