This Saturday June 9, from 2-5 pm, the annual St Nicholas’ Garden Fete will take place at The Rectory on Taylor’s Hill, Salthill. Everyone is invited to the fun-filled day, one of Galway’s great social occasions. Parking will be available at St. Mary’s College. All proceeds from the fete will go to maintain St Nicholas’.

The latest figures released last week by the Department of Housing for April showed a fourfold increase in the number of families in emergency accommodation in the West of Ireland compared to April 2017. There was a 60% increase in the number of adults in emergency accommodation over the same period.
Karen Golden, CEO of Galway Simon Community, said that the charity is now extremely concerned about the very significant increases in these numbers. She said that it is difficult to see how the situation will improve in the near future given the pressures on housing supply in the city.

The awards recognise and celebrate community and voluntary activity in the county. A record number of nominations were received for the nine different categories of awards presented on the night.

A new lecture series at the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies at NUI Galway, will continue with Established Professor of Political Science and Sociology Niamh Reilly, on Thursday, 21 June at 5pm.
The lecture will take place in room G011, Moore Institute in the James Hardiman Library. In her talk, Professor Reilly will discuss gifted public intellectual, essayist, journalist, and nationalist MP Tom Kettle (1880-1916), who was killed in the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

On Friday two-thirds of the Irish electorate voted to remove the discriminatory Eighth Amendment from our Constitution. It is no wonder Galway West and East both voted Yes by such large majorities. We have seen firsthand the negative effects of the Eighth Amendment in our county.
