Former Galway East TD and Galway county councillor, Colm Keaveney appeared before Tuam District Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to one drug-driving offence and two charges of driving without insurance.

The former Labour TD was first elected to the Dail in 2011 but later joined Fianna Fáil. He lost his Dáil seat in 2016 and regained his Co Council seat as a Fianna Fáil member in 2019, but did not contest the 2024 local elections.

€60m Crown Square loan unseen by minister

Minister for local government, James Browne, is yet to receive a request from Galway City Council to approve its €60 million loan to fit out the empty commercial shell it owns in Crown Square.

The local authority purchased Number 3 Crown Square from developer JJ Rhatigan for its new HQ, with a separate, €45 million loan, approved in 2022, although the unfinished building has depreciated by €7 million since.

A YOUNG man who got involved in a fracas alongside a manned Garda van on the night of the Leaving Cert results was the only one of the half-dozen involved arrested as the rest ran away, but he was the last man standing because he was incapable of running, his defence pleaded when he faced public order charges at the September 1 sitting of Galway District Court.

Judge Adrian Harris said he was shocked and saddened beyond words to learn that Garda Diarmuid Ó Tuairisg (40) had passed away suddenly on Friday, and was especially saddened as this terrible news came so soon after the passing of his colleague, Garda Don Connellan (51).
