Cllr. John McDonagh has welcomed Galway City Council’s decision to refer his motion on restricting overnight parking of camper vans and motorhomes in the Claddagh to the Operations, Transport & Infrastructure Special Policy Committee (SPC ) for detailed examination and the development of solutions.
Brought forward in response to a sharp rise in overnight parking by large recreational vehicles, the motion highlights serious concerns raised by residents.
Local households have reported being unable to park outside their own homes, obstruction of sightlines, and increased pressure on already limited residential parking.
Many residents are frustrated that public streets intended for the community are instead being used as makeshift overnight camping areas.
“Galway is proud of its tourism reputation, but unmanaged overnight parking is not acceptable,” said Cllr. McDonagh.
“Public spaces must work for everyone. Right now, residents in the Claddagh and along Grattan Road are being squeezed out of their own neighbourhoods. They deserve better, and that’s why this action is needed.”
Cllr McDonagh’s motion calls for a review and amendment of the relevant by-laws to ensure that overnight parking in the Claddagh is restricted to private cars only, supported by appropriate enforcement measures to restore residential amenity.
The Council has agreed that the matter will now be examined by the SPC, and Cllr McDonagh has kept the motion on the agenda to ensure a progress update at the January City Council meeting. He has emphasised the importance of clear, practical and enforceable proposals being brought forward without delay.
Residents of Beach Court have also requested that their area, along Grattan Road, be included in the review, citing similar pressures from overnight camper van parking.
“Galway’s reputation as a welcoming city depends on thoughtful public-space management,” Cllr. McDonagh added.
“We can support tourism while still protecting the quality of life of those who live here year-round. I’m committed to ensuring residents’ voices are heard and that meaningful solutions are delivered,” he concluded.
