Perfect Early Spring Perennials

Tue, Mar 06, 2018

Let’s consider some of the earlier perennial plants that do so much to extend the growing season in the garden. As a garden designer, I’m constantly looking for ways to improve people’s enjoyment of their outdoor spaces, and even though the year’s still young, there are so many beautiful plants that can brighten up borders in early spring, so it’s well worth seeking them out.

The ‘Green Grass’ in The Claddagh

Thu, Mar 01, 2018

This photograph of ‘The Green Grass’, also known as ‘The Big Grass’, in The Claddagh was taken on July 29, 1914. It was taken from roughly where the Claddagh Hall is today. There was a wide expanse of grass off to the left towards where South Park is today. In the early days parts of it were tidal, the tide would come in here in the form of a series of streams. In Peadar O’Dowd’s wonderful book Down By The Claddagh, there is an image of this area with a very large stream in the foreground. These streams were gradually filled in, thus creating the kind of surface we see in the photograph. There were occasional sandy patches visible on the grass.

Real lunchtime value at Osteria Italiana

Thu, Mar 01, 2018

As we noted before on these pages, when on holidays it is often the case that the best and best-value restaurants are often off the beaten track. That does not mean you have to walk miles to find them — a terrible meal on La Rambla in Barcelona or in the shadow of the Vatican’s walls will cost you plenty. A lovely meal a few meters down almost any side street could cost half that. Just a couple of minutes away from the main streets of Galway and just paces from Eyre Square, Osteria Italiana is such a place and one of the city's most authentic Italian eateries.

Hearty healthy soups at SuperSubs

Thu, Mar 01, 2018

There are a lot of well kept secrets in the west. John Huston’s beach is one. It is all about the ingredients when it comes to this undiscovered beauty spot. It is situated on an inlet on the rugged Atlantic shoreline. It has pristine white sand. It is small enough to be intimate yet big enough to be striking. And it has that extra bit of magic of having been used as a west of Ireland hideaway by one of the most famous directors in Hollywood in the last century. Part of the magic of the beach is that not many people know it exists, but those who do will tell you that it is one of the best little beaches in the world.

One of the best kept secrets in foodie circles is the soup at SuperSubs. Made fresh and delivered every morning to the SuperSubs outlets, this soup is as tasty as spending a day on one of the most beautiful beaches in the country and having it all to yourself. This product is 100 per cent fresh and 100 per cent natural. You can get hearty veg, butternut squash, the delicious tomato and red pepper, and a lot more. And when you combine it with a light sandwich you can have a nice filling lunch that is under 300kcal.
