The site of the Augustinian House when the order first came to Galway in 1508 was on the hill we know as Forthill today. Margaret Athy, the wife of the Mayor Stephen Lynch, invited them and she built a church and steeple there too. Her husband was away in Spain and got a shock when he returned to see the finished new building on the hill. The friars moved into a house within the walled city but their church was still between the city and the bay.

The benefits of a general degree in arts or science

There are three general degrees available at university – business, which I covered in my last article, as well as science and arts, which I will cover in this article. General degrees are a great starting point for any student who does not know what they want to do after the Leaving Cert but really enjoyed studying a group of subjects or one subject at Leaving Cert. For example, many students who really enjoyed biology and chemistry go on to do general science. Other students who enjoyed arts subjects such as English, history or languages may opt to study an arts degree.

In general science, for example in the University of Galway, students usually study biology, chemistry, physics and maths (or similar subjects) and then go on to specialise in three subjects in second year, and then two subjects in final year. There are 20 subjects to choose from and these range from astrophysics to zoology. These subjects are usually offered to students based on academic merit, meaning those who obtain the highest exam results will be offered their first subject choice. Subjects such as anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are particularly popular and have only a limited number of places. Other subjects such as microbiology and zoology have more places available. It is important to note that any student undertaking a science degree will be expected to attend labs on a weekly basis as lab work is a large component of all science subjects. There are many options available after a science degree and many students choose subjects that will pave the way for postgraduate study that require these subjects for entry. Other students pursue subjects that they discovered in university and want to pursue as a career.

In the 1930s, Ireland instructed all of its consul officials in Europe not to issue visas to Jewish refugees, but the country was also in a state of economic stagnation at the time and Seán Lemass realised that new industries would help the country. An Irish Jewish businessman, Marcus Witztum, offered to help him and went to Paris, met Henri Orbach there who owned a small hat factory and suggested he open a business in Ireland, a safer place for people of the Jewish persuasion than continental Europe. Orbach agreed.

University of Galway offers commerce, which is three years, and global commerce, which is similar in course content but offers an additional year for a study abroad or placement option. There are also international commerce courses, which allow you to study a general commerce degree with a language – French, Spanish, German or Gaeilge. International commerce is a four year course and includes a compulsory Erasmus year in the country of the language. In Ireland, a nation with approximately 300,000 people living with diabetes, the incidence of amputations among diabetic patients has reached a concerning level. Reports indicate that 671 patients underwent amputations due to diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) last year, which not only results in life-altering consequences for individuals but also poses a significant economic burden on the healthcare system. These statistics emphasize the importance of implementing this evidence-based treatment to tackle this growing crisis.

DFUs are primarily caused by poor circulation and reduced oxygen supply to the affected area, impairing the body's ability to heal. Hyperbaric oxygenation addresses this issue by saturating the bloodstream with increased levels of oxygen. This surplus oxygen reaches the damaged tissues, stimulating cell growth, reducing inflammation, fighting infection, and promoting faster wound healing. Additionally, HBOT enhances the formation of new blood vessels, boosting circulation and oxygenation in the affected area, ultimately saving limbs from amputation.
