Buttercups and daisies

Thu, May 10, 2018

Weed - noun. 'A wild plant growing where it is not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants.'

As if somebody has suddenly pushed a switch they are everywhere, and it is not just buttercups and daisies, there are countless weeds appearing in unwanted places — dandelions, clover, thistles, even rushes, mares tail, and ragwort. Wild flowers that are growing in a meadow might be pretty to look at but when they appear in your lawn they become an unwanted weed, spoiling the green carpet of grass that you are trying to nurture.

People of the Tribes: Meet Paul.

Tue, May 08, 2018

Hi, I'm Paul David Murphy and I'm from Ballinrobe, County Mayo but and I live and work in Galway city centre. I've embraced the city with both hands since I moved here in 2009 and I love it. For the last number of years, I've been heavily involved in the Arts and Events scene and I've worked at almost every event and Festival in City. September two years ago I set up Tiny Traders Village. Aside from running this I also work freelance in the Events industry and in hospitality. I also am a semi-professional stand up comedian and I'm just back from a second UK tour with Internet sensations and fellow Galwegians Farmer Michael and Kathleen. I've been unofficially labelled the "busiest man in Galway" by some due to my involvement in "everything" around the town. I absolutely love Galway and I genuinely think its one of the best places to live in the World. Bring on the summer.

People of the Tribes : Meet Andy.

Tue, May 08, 2018

Hi, my name is Andy Cavalleri. I'm an Italian by blood but Irish by heart. My parents moved here from Lake Como back in the mid 70's. We used to travel back to Italy for summer and winter holidays when we were younger, whereas now I try and get over at least once a year to catch up with family and friends. I've always had a keen interest in food and cakes from a young age, and as you do I tried all kinds of work before bouncing back to food and baking. I started trading in the Moycullen Country Market just over 4 years ago selling Spelt cakes at first and now I'm selling flourless cakes and raw vegan cakes too. It's exciting to find different methods in making cakes, I always try to make different cakes packed full of flavour.

Brunch at Salthill’s Ground & Co

Thu, May 03, 2018

There was a time when The Spanish Arch was a car park and there was nothing much on Middle Street except the Augi. That was when BT was still Moon's and Nora Barnacle's house was just another house, before Westside was called Westside and there was nothing Latin about the Latin Quarter — that was the time Salthill was the undisputed centre of all nightlife in the west of Ireland. While those days are long gone, Salthill seems to be reinventing itself once more.

Salthill is as much a residential satellite suburb for the city as it is a traditional seaside resort. Facilities such as the aquarium, Leisureland, and the slot machine palaces entice tourists to spend their holiday money, while a favourite pastime for Galwegians and visitors alike is walking along the seaside promenade running from the edge of the city, Salthill's biggest asset. Local tradition dictates 'kicking the wall' across from the diving boards before turning back the way you came. There is plenty to enjoy in the area around the beach and prom, the summertime funfair, amusements, and playground. There are elegant old buildings amid the Celtic Tiger style apartments in this area that seem able to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at them. In and around Salthill there have always been plenty of cosy pubs from where you can watch storms roll over the bay, but while Salthill has many good points, up until lately, a wide choice of places to eat was not one of them.

What is candida?

Thu, May 03, 2018

Candida is a yeast normally found in certain parts of our body such as mouth, intestines, and vagina. Recently scientists have discovered it living normally, without causing problems, in our eyes. If our immune system is working normally candida does not cause us any problems; on the contrary it helps with our digestion and nutrition and vitamin absorption. It is only if it starts to overgrow and turn into a fungal infection that it can start causing symptoms.

It is one of the most common fungal infections found in humans. Candida is dimorphic — it changes from yeast to fungus and produces finger-like structures called hyphae which can burrow through the wall of the intestine and penetrate through, causing a phenomenon called leaky gut syndrome.
