They are usually led by a drum major with a mace to signal movements such as starting, stopping, wheeling etc. So we thought today to show you some of those bands who have graced our streets and entertained us over the years.

Thu, Feb 26, 2026
In the early fifties, Sisk’s (led by foreman Jack Lillis) built a factory ‘out the country’ on a two-and-a-half acres on Sandy Road. It was part of a 15-acre site and the state-of-the-art building would house an industry called Galway Textile Printers which would become known as ‘The Cotton Factory’ or even ‘The Cotton’. We already had a hat factory and a china factory in Galway, but this was industry on a new scale in here. They quickly became one of the biggest employers in the west of Ireland. A number of those who worked there were specialists who were brought in to help set up the factory, but most of the employees were local.

Thu, Feb 26, 2026
Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than three months or continues after an injury has healed. Unlike short-term pain, it no longer serves a protective purpose and can become a long-term health condition. The pain may be constant or intermittent, ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain that limits daily activities. Over time, chronic pain can interfere with sleep, mood, concentration, work performance, and overall quality of life.
Common causes of chronic pain include arthritis, long-term back or neck disorders, nerve damage, headaches, and past injuries. In some cases, even after tissues have healed, the nervous system continues to send pain signals. Symptoms may include persistent aching, burning or tingling sensations, stiffness, muscle tightness, swelling, fatigue, poor sleep, and reduced mobility. Emotional challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression are also common and can intensify the perception of pain.

Rare Disease Day (February 28) shines a light on conditions that are often overlooked or misunderstood. While non-healing wounds aren’t rare in the strict medical sense, they can be underestimated.
Chronic, or non-healing, wounds are far more common than many realise. They can particularly affect those living with diabetes, poor circulation, vascular disease, radiation therapy injuries, or compromised immune systems. Bed sores, pressure sores, and skin grafts can also be slow to heal, especially in elderly patients and those with delicate skin. These wounds often do not show meaningful healing, even after several weeks.
