Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford were to have a joint wedding with his sister Geraldine Plunkett and her fiancé Tom Dillon, at the Rathmines church, Easter Sunday, April 24 1916. The confusion about the on/off Rising, the rumours about the possibility of Roger Casement being taken prisoner in Kerry, kept the couples guessing as to what would happen. But Joseph, one of the principle organisers of the Rising, probably knew more that what he said to his sister, that Grace ‘did not know the smallest thing about the political situation, and had no idea whatever of such things’.*

There is a very interesting map of “St Stephen’s Island” in Mary Naughten’s excellent little history of the Parish of St Francis in Woodquay. It is dated 1785 and shows the beginnings of what would be now known as Newtownsmith. It consisted mostly of small houses, yards, malt houses, and a burial ground. This ‘new town’ was largely built by the governors of the Erasmus Smith estate. In this suburb, a county courthouse was erected between 1812 and 1815, and a town courthouse during 1824. In 1823 it was objected that there were several suitable sites for a new courthouse ‘immediately in the town’ and that it was ’quite idle’ to lay foundations in Newtownsmith, or in any part of the suburb.

Padraic Pearse, the self-identified President of the Provisional Government, and Commandant-General of the Army of the Irish Republic was rushed to the gallows, or in this case to the grim stonebreakers yard at Kilmainham jail.
In the chaos that followed the Rising during which 450 people were killed and more than 2,500 wounded, around 3,500 had been arrested, 79 of whom were women.* The signatories of the Proclamation, and the leaders of the various rebel held garrisons around the city, were either already separated out, or quickly pointed out among the crowd.

The first team to represent Connacht in rugby played against Leinster on December 8 1885. At that time, the game in the west was played by just a few schools. In the city, it was really only UCG and the Grammar School who played with any regularity. By the beginning of the last century the Jes, the Bish, and St Mary’s were competing. The growth of the game was interrupted by World War I and by the War of Independence, but it improved a lot after the truce.

The Maldron Hotel on Sandy Road has had various incarnations. The Courtyard by Marriot Hotel, as it was many moons ago, changed to the Pillo Hotel and most recently became a Maldron, sister hotel to the Oranmore Maldron. A modern building on the the fringes of the city, this is a landmark with its glazed exterior and its location opposite The Menlo Park. The glass frontage points you towards the Headford Road, and inside, the high-vaulted reception space combines international airport chic and modern design which has not dated since opening as The Courtyard over a decade ago. Set back from the busy road that encircles the city, it also has the advantage of being just minutes from the centre of town with free underground parking.
Attentive service starts at the front desk and you are directed to the Point Bar and Olive Tree Bistro area to one side, a darker, more cosy, space in contrast. The bar is always buzzing at the weekend, it is a popular lunch spot for sports enthusiasts with its big screens visible from most seats. The bistro is quieter and more conducive to a relaxed meal. It is popular with families and there are usually a few couples with young children in tow. The menu reflects the Sunday clientele, a compact but well-judged menu featuring a traditional Sunday roast with many other family favourites on offer. It represents good value and is also served in the bar area.
