Will Galway beat Mayo?

Thu, Jan 11, 2018

The rivalry between Galway and Mayo is as old as the provincial championship itself. The Connacht GAA Council was actually founded on the same day that Galway and Mayo contested the first ‘official’ Connacht senior football final. That game was played in Claremorris in November 1902 and was won by Mayo. Galway played “with the wind and the incline” in the first half while the vast crowd agreed to “keep strictly outside the field of play”, something the organisers clearly regarded as an unexpected bonus.

People of The Tribes : Meet John

Fri, Jan 05, 2018

Hi, I'm John Jennings from Galway City. I am an award-winning filmmaker and artist and I have been exhibited nationally and internationally. My art has two modes: Manga (a form of Japanese drawing) and abstract metamodern images. Sometimes I use technology, such as QR Codes or virtual games, to exhibit my art. Even though I have been exhibited globally, nothing gives me a greater sense of pride than walking past a local art space and seeing my art exhibited there. I have lived in Galway all my life and I love the way culture in Galway is constantly developing and changing, yet somehow, it has the same feeling about it. I like the Anime, Manga and Cosplay culture of Galway. It is great how the tech hubs and businesses interact with the art world. No matter what you are into there is a Tribe in Galway for you.

Liam Mellows, county champions

Thu, Jan 04, 2018

We know that hurling was played in the Bohermore area 200 years ago. Several different clubs operated around there at different times — Galway City, Bohermore 98s, College Road, Thomas Ashe, etc. Players would occasionally transfer from one club to another so it was natural for them to join the new club that was formed on February 11, 1933. The club was called Liam Mellows after the patriot who led the 1916 rebellion in Galway.

The ring on her finger told a different story

Thu, Jan 04, 2018

When Sheron Boyle was researching her family’s history she often wondered why her grandmother Margaret (nee Martin), who had emigrated to America at 20 years of age, and who seemed to be happy and settled, living close to her relatives who had gone before her, suddenly returned to her farmstead near Rockfort in Irishtown, Co Mayo.

After a providential start, which I will tell in a moment, she had plunged straight into her new life joining her sister and her unmarried aunt (both named Celia Martin), working as a maid in Hartford, Connecticut, for the politically active Hooker family. A photograph exists showing Margaret with her siblings who had also emigrated, looking happy in a very fine dress, her hair piled high on her fine young head, and smart. It was said she won first prize at a raffle, and that was a ticket back to Ireland. Margaret suddenly came home.

The nailer forge

Thu, Dec 28, 2017

The Connaught Journal of July 1823 reported that Michael Walsh, the nailer of Bridge Street, was in great distress. He was described as being very poor, and though he worked hard, his life had been a struggle for some 12 years now because of a ‘disease of his leg’. The unfortunate man had to have the leg amputated and was now ‘reduced to extreme want’ as he was unable to work. The newspaper highlighted his predicament and hoped that the charitable and humane people of Galway would contribute to his support while he was recovering from the operation. So we know that the nailer was in business there some 200 years ago.

New horizons for apprenticeships

Thu, Dec 28, 2017

Recently the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, announced that 26 new national apprenticeships were approved for further development. These are programmes of structured education and training which combine learning on the job with theory and instruction in an educational institution. They prepare participants for a specific occupation that leads to a qualification.

The Government Action Plan (2016-2020) is to double the number of apprenticeships currently available. Budget 2018 allocated €122 million for development, an increase of 24 per cent on the previous year. Traditional craft apprenticeships includes those in construction, electrical, engineering, and motor sections. The Construction Industry Federation has a dedicated website for young people interested in registering their interest in a construction related trade on www.apprentices.ie. The area is now slowly extending to white collar jobs such as finance and IT comparable to other European countries. The German model is highly praised as it is reported close to 60 per cent take up of places in an economy where up to 300 types of apprenticeship are available. In Switzerland up to 70 per cent participate in apprenticeships. Apprentices can “earn while you learn” and have a national recognised qualification.
