Francis Corbett was a member of the well known business family who owned Corbett and Sons in Williamsgate Street. He was one of five siblings, one of whom, Gerard, went into the business. Francis also worked there but only for a short time, as he died relatively young in 1946. He was a talented artist, as were his brother Redmond and his sisters Lucy and Agnes. Francis was one of the founders of the Galway Art Club, and became its first treasurer.

Rick Hanson, an eminent neuropsychologist, describes how this negativity bias of the brain makes it like Velcro for bad experience and Teflon for good experience. Furthermore this negativity can often be seen in our attitudes of self-criticism, which we believe leads to our improved performance. However a harsh self-critical inner voice can undermine our self-confidence and self-esteem and lead to feelings of guilt and shame that chip away at our mental wellbeing.

The Spanish Institute is starting the year with new courses for adults, teenagers, and children. The new term will commence on February 5 and will offer a variety of Spanish classes to all levels, from beginner to advanced. The new schedule of courses is available on the institute’s website www.spanishinstitute.ie and on its Facebook page Spanish Institute.

The Spanish Institute has been running for the last seven years and has become the centre of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture in Galway. Along with language courses, this new term the school will offer a variety of Hispanic cultural events, conversation classes, pronunciation labs, Spanish cinema evenings, and immersion trips open to everyone.

The chemical handling course is not only relevant for the workplace, it also applies to any home. Most people are not aware of the range of harmful chemicals in their cupboards.
