When I was boy, as soon as school ended, my mother whisked us off to her home in west Cork, where my brother, sister and I spent most of the summer. It was a very different place to Galway. We enjoyed large family picnics, long afternoons fishing and rabbit shooting (everything was eaten), and picking fruit and vegetables in my grandparents’ large garden. Looking at old black and white photographs our everyday clothes were zipped corduroy jackets, short pants and wellies.

Making our own meals at home lets us have control over all the ingredients – particularly necessary for those of us who can be sensitive (rather than allergic or intolerant) to things like wheat, gluten, or dairy, or even just those who can feel heavy and sluggish after rich meals. So what about when we head off on our holidays, when things like the language barrier or new foods can put a dampener on things?
‘Traveller’s tummy’ is a really common issue people can encounter when abroad, even if we previously would not experience digestive problems – all the new food, spices, preparation methods, and bacteria can wreak havoc with our digestion. Try to always stay hydrated with clean water, and invest in a good traveller’s probiotic to keep your own bacteria flourishing. You can take a probiotic for a couple of weeks before your departure, and bring them with you as well. Another great product is a complex of digestive enzymes – these can help support the body in breaking down rich foods using enzymes like amylase or bromelain.
