Some nasty close shaves in Galway

Thu, Oct 01, 2020

Baker’s Hotel and Billiard Rooms on Eyre Street was run by Captain Baker who had served with the British army during the war. It was much frequented by the Black and Tans, some of whom (including Edward Crumm) stayed there. Baker’s daughter Eileen, who had recently saved a little boy named Hennessy from drowning in the canal, gave evidence at the military enquiry into the death of Constable Crumm. The local volunteers suspected her of being too friendly with the Tans, and because of that she had a startling experience on the morning of September 18, 1920.

Thu, Oct 01, 2020

Enjoy an evening of your favourite takeaways without the guilt. Check out these delicious fakeaway meals using healthy, nutritious, ingredients available at your local Joyce’s Supermarket.

Bursting with flavours and spices, this recipe is a healthy and quick alternative to the much-loved spice bag, and it could not be any simpler to make. To create this dish all you need is one red chilli, one red pepper, one onion, one chicken breast, and McDonnell’s spice bag seasoning mix. Cut the chicken breast into small thick slices. Create a batter to coat the chicken pieces in by mixing one egg, ¾ spice bag seasoning mix, and 4 tbsp flour. Cook the chicken strips for 35 minutes at 180 degrees. Chop up the pepper, onion, and chilli, and sauté on a pan until soft. Add to a bowl and mix with the chicken strips and remaining McDonnell’s spice bag seasoning. Et voila!

It can be easy to give up on the garden at this time of year and I’ve definitely been guilty of that myself over the last month or so. As summer ends and growth slows, things tend to get overgrown and a bit neglected, plants sprawling and looking past their best – just like humans do at the end of a party.
