Music school gears up for tenth anniversary

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Maoin Cheoil na Gaillimhe. Over the past decade the school has grown from simple beginnings to a substantial music education provider in the city. It has already trained almost 20 new teachers for the city with professional diplomas, and another 200 primary school teachers have been certified in new and exciting ways to work with students.

The school currently operates from its base in the Presentation National School and in its satellite school Scoil Mhuire in Moycullen. Between them there are more than 20 staff providing 400 budding young musicians with instrumental lessons, and almost 1,200 more on its Colourstrings outreach programme, teaching music in primary schools. This year, with the help of funding from the Lifes2Good Foundation the school is planning to build a multi-campus platform that will see lessons rolled out right across the city, for children on both sides of the Corrib, from September 2020.

In the meantime there will be a full schedule of events for the anniversary year which will begin with a series of 10 concerts which will feature the talents of musicians working in the city and county, giving a platform to some of the amazing artists living among us.

The school will also host a number of workshops with visiting professionals to develop and nurture growing talent.

These events are always free to students of the school, and open a world of possibilities for the young people of the city. Some have already embarked on a path that will take them as far as their dreams allow. There are limited places left in the school for this year in both centres. The gift of music has no equal in the life of a child. If you wish to begin that journey then contact the school on 091 528965 or [email protected].
