A MYSTERIOUS accident. A dead husband. People are talking. Secrets are resurfacing from the depths. Is the past ever truly dead? Not in The Beacon which receives it's world premiere in Galway.
The Beacon, the new play by Nancy Harris, and directed by Garry Hynes, will be performed in the Town Hall Theatre from Friday September 20 to Sunday 28. The cast is Jane Brennan, Rae Gray, Dan Monaghan, Cillian Ó Gairbhí and Marty Rea. As well as being a world premiere, it will also be Nancy Harris’s Druid debut.
Beiv, a celebrated artist, has moved from suburban Dublin to her holiday cottage on an island off the Cork coast. However, a dark shadow from the past hangs over her. When her estranged son and his wife arrive to stay, she is faced with difficult questions.
"We were delighted when Nancy accepted Druid’s offer of commission and thrilled when we first read The Beacon," said Druid artistic director, Garry Hynes. "She is a fiercely talented writer and it’s a particular pleasure to be continuing our year of new writing with this compelling and ambitious play."
Harris is the winner of The Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and The Stewart Parker Award, for her 2012 debut full-length play No Romance. She has also written for radio and television, and was nominated for a BAFTA as a Breakthrough Talent in 2014 for her writing on the Channel 4 series Dates.
The Beacon is a Druid and Gate Theatre co-production. Previews are September 20, 21, and 23 (8pm ), with the official opening night on September 24 (8pm ). There will be a matinee on September 28 (2.30pm ). For tickets contact the Town Hall (091 - 569777, www.tht.ie ). See also www.druid.ie
