NUI Galway awards new sports scholarships

Thirty-two students have been awarded sports scholarships at NUI Galway this week, bringing the total number of students receiving sports scholarships at the university to 60.

Recipients this year include Jennifer Byrne who was part of the Irish Women’s soccer team that reached the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup this summer in Trinidad and Tobago, while Mervue United goalkeeper Gerard Hanley is among those to receive a soccer scholarship. Hanley, whose sister Marion is a past winner of a tennis scholarship, was recently called up the Irish u-21 squad.

Mervue United's vast improvement in 2011 was rewarded with a seventh placed finish in the League of Ireland First Division.

Alex Lee's goal four minutes from the end of Saturday's Fahy Field encounter with Finn Harps finished Mervue's season off on a positive note as Johnny Glynn's youngsters earned a fifth home win of the year. Glynn's diligent work ensures Mervue are now a respected team in this division and the continued development of Ger Hanley, Dave O'Brien, Martin Conneely, Etanda Nkololo, Jason Molloy, and Pat Hoban provides further encouragement.
