Valiant minors’ character to be tested again

This Sunday at noon Jeffrey Lynskey's gallant Galway minors will take on Kilkenny in their All-Ireland minor replay as part of a triple-header at Croke Park with the second minor semi-final, between Tipperary and Dublin (2pm), and the senior All-Ireland semi-final between Galway and Tipperary (4pm).

Last Sunday's drawn game was an exciting encounter which ended all square, Galway 2-20, to Kilkenny's 0-26, after extra time.

Galway camogie ladies not taking victory for granted

It has been a good season so far for Tony Ward's Galway senior camogie players and they hope to continue their winning ways when they face Wexford in the All-Ireland semi-final this Saturday in Nowlan Park (3.30pm).

The team has been in good form. Having played 10 games thus far, they have won nine and drawn just one - that draw was way back in the first fixture of the year against Limerick in the league, so the omens are positive for a victory on Saturday.

With an EA Sports Cup final place secured Galway United will be hoping to build on Monday's satisfying penalty shootout success over Dundalk when hosting Derry City in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division at Eamonn Deacy Park tomorrow.

Goalkeeper Ger Hanley made two remarkable saves denying Ronan Finn and David McMillan as a depleted United outfit caused a shock in the west. After an interesting match ended scoreless Stephen Walsh, David O'Leary, Jake Keegan, and Colm Horgan all converted spot-kicks for Galway, who will face St Patrick's Athletic in the decider on September 19.

Live rugby action returns to the Sportsground next Friday for the first of Connacht’s pre-season friendlies of the 2015/16 season, against French side FC Grenoble.

Former Connacht players Bernard Jackman, head coach at Grenoble, and Andrew Farley, team manager, will bring their Top 14 side to Galway on Friday August 7 for a 5:15pm kick off. It has been 10 years since Grenoble last played in Galway when the French side were drawn in the same Challenge Cup pool as Connacht.

The winner of thetote.com Galway Plate, Shanahan’s Turn, as he crosses the finish line at Ballybrit last evening. He returned at odds of 16/1. In second place, was the Willie Mullins trained The Paparrazi Kid which returned at 12/1. The winner was ridden by Cork jockey Johnny Burke and trained in County Waterford by Henry de Bromhead, who also trained third placed Sadler’s Risk. Shanahan’s Turn carried the familiar colours of well known owners Alan and Ann Potts.

Footballers will have to produce a big performance to defeat Donegal

This Saturday in Croke Park (6pm) the Galway footballers will have to produce one of their best performances in a few seasons to beat the 2012 All-Ireland champions and 2014 All-Ireland finalists Donegal, in their round four qualifier clash. 

The winners on Saturday evening will face either Monaghan or Mayo in the All-Ireland quarter-finals on Sunday week. Galway are not without hope in this clash, as they are on the back of two momentum building victories over Armagh and Derry in the qualifiers.

Galway Parks tennis finals

The finals of the Galway Parks tennis competition took place at the Galway Lawn Tennis Club on Friday July 24. A total of eight venues hosted tennis camps for the previous four weeks, culminating in the competition finale last Friday.

New sponsor Maxol will have been delighted with the attendances, with big crowds watching proceedings at Barna, Crestwood, Doughiska, Knocknacarra, Maree, Roscam, Tuam, and Westside. Maree retained their position as top team by winning four titles, while Barna and Knocknacarra each brought home one apiece.

Galway United hope to produce improved performance against St Pat's

Following last Friday's demoralising SSE Airtricity League Premier Division defeat to Bray Wanderers Galway United will be hoping to produce a much improved performance against St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park tomorrow.

Liam Buckley's in form side have won six top flight matches on the spin scoring 17 goals in the process so United will need to be diligent from the outset. Manager Tommy Dunne wasn't happy with United's display when Bray claimed a fourth win on the spin with a last gasp goal.
