According to the property price register at the end of August, the number of property sales for both Galway city and county is showing a dramatic increase year on year. The register gives the exact selling price of properties and so is the most accurate record of actual sales that have taken place.

Some property reports use asking prices as their source, others use prices which properties were 'for sale' at; neither of these give accurate information which can be relied on. As the property price register is only completed when sales are finalised, it could be argued that it lags behind real time selling prices by a few months. However, it is still the only definitive register for actual property sales.

Elderly forced to find own transport to daycare centre

A number of elderly people attending a day care centre in the city must organise their own transport to and from the facility because a HSE West bus service is no longer available.

The bus, which can carry 10 people, is out of action for two weeks so far due to a mechanical problem and the local health authority says it could be a few more weeks before a replacement vehicle is in operation.

A Medical Council fitness to practise committee has adjourned an inquiry into an allegation that a Galway doctor carried out a fertility procedure without the patient’s consent.

According to reports, Dr Declan Egan, a consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist who practises at University Hospital Galway and runs the Galway Fertility Unit in Rahoon, faces an allegation of poor professional performance.

Galwegians with stories about relatives who fought in The Great War or who have objects and memorabilia from the period are being asked to take part in an event at the Galway City Museum.

The WWI Open Day takes place in the museum’s Education Room on Saturday September 13 from 11am to 1pm. People are invited to share stories, photos or objects linked to the War years of 1914-18. All stories shared will form part of an online project about the local impact of WW1 on Galway city. Where appropriate, objects may also be considered for display in a forthcoming exhibition.
