Fine Gael will hold its selection convention for Galway West on Sunday June 7 with six candidates looking likely to compete for a place on the party ticket.

The party’s two Galway West TDs, Brian Walsh and Seán Kyne, along with Sen Hildegarde Naughton, will be putting their names forward at convention, as will former Galway GAA football manager John O’Mahoney, who is switching to Galway West, following the amalgamation of his south Mayo heartland into the constituency. It is likely Cllr Patsy O’Brien from Ballinrobe and Cllr Eileen Mannion from Clifden will also seek a place on the FG ticket. Nominations will open shortly and more names may emerge before the convention is held.

It is also understood FG will seek to run a four candidate ticket in the five seat Galway West constituency, although many party members will be concerned that this could split the vote when the party will have an uphill battle to retain its two seats.
