On St Valentine’s Day, poetry straight from the heart...or from the heart’s data

If the heart could speak, what would it say? A new project at NUI Galway, launching on Valentine’s Day, aims to address this question with an unconventional approach to producing poetry. The project, Eververse, combines methods and tools from literary studies and computer science to automatically generate poetry that corresponds to a person’s biometric data, that is how fast their heart is beating, how deeply they are sleeping, and so on.

Galway-native senator urges graduate diaspora to register for Seanad elections

Galway-native but US-based senator Billy Lawless has this week urged graduate members of the Irish diaspora to avail of their rights to vote in any future Seanad elections.

“As many of you know, I have focused a lot of my efforts in Seanad Eireann on inclusion of the Irish Diaspora in the affairs of Ireland. So, I want to highlight an important way for many of our men and women living abroad to exercise their democratic right to vote in the upcoming Seanad elections,” he said, reminding graduates that they are the only Irish citizens living outside the State that have a vote.

Rohingya Action Ireland welcomes city council move on Aung San Suu Kyi Freedom

The Rohingya community in Ireland has welcomed the gesture of Galway City Council stripping Aung San Suu Kyi of Freedom of City bestowed in 2005, and the resolution calling to endorse the UN Fact-Finding Mission report to refer the Myanmar Military to the International Criminal Court for the genocide against Rohingya.

They say that the overwhelming support for both resolutions send a clear message of condemnation the gravest crimes committed against Rohingya and other ethnic minorities as well as a message of solidarity with the victims and survivors of genocide under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi.
