Heinrich Boll weekend ready to roll

The ninth annual Heinrich Boll Memorial Weekend will take place from Friday May 3 to Sunday May 6 at the Cyril Gray Memorial Hall, Dugort, Achill. The weekend will be formally opened by Professor Enda McDonagh at 7.30pm on Friday. The weekend event will focus on the work of American painter Robert Henri, who worked on Achill 100 years ago this year.

Ambulance response times to life-threatening conditions improving but still not on target

Bed shortage in Mayo for elderly patients

No additional beds will be opened at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, to deal with the increasing number of elderly patients in Mayo, a meeting of the HSE West Regional Forum was told this week. The hospital is operating to the 77 bed capacity which has been set out by HIQA.

Fianna Fáil councillor Annie May Reape raised the issue and asked what provisions were being made for the rise in elderly patients as “there appears to be an acute shortage of beds”.

Mayor launches RehabCare artists exhibition

“Each piece of art on display tells its own story” —the words of Councillor Brendan Henaghan, Mayor of Castlebar, as he opened RehabCare’s art exhibition in the Linenhall Arts Centre. The exhibition which runs until April 6 features a range of paintings and crafts. The works were created by 50 artists, all of whom have an intellectual disability, physical/sensory disability, or mental health needs, and who access the RehabCare resource centres in Castlebar. Entry is free to the exhibition which has been co-ordinated by RehabCare staff member Josephine Killalea and art tutor Emma Gallagher.

Castlebar Town Council has given its backing to fund a book on the history of the council that is being compiled by former councillor Noel Campbell. At the March meeting of the council Mr Campbell gave the members a brief presentation on the research work he has carried out so far, which will go back as far as 1750. Campbell’s presentation gave the background to the town getting its first charter and the different types of local government that were in operation over the past 400 years in the town, and how it was used for different purposes by those in power at different times.

Judge Mary Devins directed the forfeiture of two pepper sprays and a taser found in the apartment of a Ballina man. The direction was made during an application for police property. A number of other items which were seized were directed to be returned to the man.

Bonniconlon man convicted for biting garda

A Bonniconlon man was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday where Judge Mary Devins said that she found the facts had been proven in relation to two assaults on gardaí. The judge recorded a conviction in relation to one of the assaults and dealt with the other assault by applying the Probation Act if the 20-year-old contributed to the Garda Benevolent Fund.
