In The Sovereignty of Good, Iris Murdoch described humility as “one of the most difficult and central of all virtues”, but many people today would hardly consider humility a virtue at all, but rather a kind of character flaw, a meanness of spirit.
Aristotle, one of the first philosophers to systematically explore the virtues, certainly viewed it this way, and exalted pride or “greatness of soul,” and held the proud man’s quest for honour as one of the highest goods one can aim for. “Humility,” he writes, “is more opposed to pride than vanity is; for it is both commoner and worse.”

The world’s next J K Rowling could have been among the 500 young Galway authors who were honoured at a special ceremony this week as part of the annual Write a Book Awards. Now in its 10th year, the competition which is run by the Galway Education Centre, aims to generate an interest in reading and writing among young people aged five to 12 years.

A major water-leak at the Lower Salthill/ Whitestrand Avenue junction has been left for a full week without repair, according to city councillor Padraig Conneely.
“This leak has turned into a stream of running water and Galway City Council’s Road and Infrastructure Department has allowed this leak to go unrepaired over the busy June Bank Holiday weekend.”

The GAA is a fine example of an organisation not afraid of change; not afraid to invest in a world class stadium; brave to modify some of their historical tenets to reflect a changed world. The club and county structure provide a fantastic means to relay back to HQ what is happening on the ground. If rules of the game need to be changed, after proposals, discussion and a vote, they are changed, the sport no less engaging. Politics should pay heed.

A new agency tasked with reducing and eliminating hospital waiting lists will lead to Galway being prioritised for funding and other benefits, that is according to the chairperson of HSE West regional health forum, Padraig Conneely.
“Galway is in the eye of the Minister and the Department of Health,” said a confident Cllr Conneely yesterday as he welcomed the Government’s move to establish a new Special Delivery Unit (SDU) and to stop referrals to the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) after July.
