The dust has settled; the new Government has come through its first 100 days; Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and US president Barack Obama have been and gone; Garrett the Good, Declan Costello, and Brian Lenihan - three icons of Irish politics - have passed to their eternal reward. What a first six months of 2011 this has been.
The political landscape has changed fundamentally in the State. Here in Galway we have seen fundamental changes also, with six new TDs and two new senators elected to represent us for the lifetime of the current Government - however long that might be.

The reduction in frontline medical services has left Galway “on the doorstep of an epidemic”. The claim was made by Senator Fidelma Healy Eames who has expressed concern at the lack of community health doctors in the area, which has led to a reduction in BCG vaccines and development checks in children.
The BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine is the primary method of preventing tuberculosis in children. There is currently a waiting list of 800 toddlers in the Galway region who are at risk of tuberculosis, as one of their parents hails from a country with a high prevalence of the disease.

A table thought to have been acquired for Tyrone House in Galway is attracting considerable interest at an auction by one of the world’s oldest and largest sellers of fine art and antiques. Bonhams, the privately owned British auction house, estimate the table to be worth up to €170,000.

To mark World Elder Abuse Day on Wednesday June 15, staff from the HSE’s Older People Service in conjunction with local community services in Galway are organising a series of workshops to create a greater awareness of elder abuse and the supports that are there for older people. The workshops will run for about two hours and will include a video, discussion, and light refreshments at the end. The workshops are free to attend and all are welcome.

South Connemara water schemes are set for a €15 million investement to upgrade their infrastructure. The announcement was made yesterday by Phil Hogan, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government as part of the Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010– 2012. The investment will specifically benefit the communities of An Cheathru Rua, Rosmuc, and Casla, with two new reservoirs at Rosmuc and An Cheathru Rua.
