€4.5 million settlement for Newcastle man

A High Court judge has approved a €4.5 million settlement for a man who is severely brain damaged after suffering viral encephalitis as a result of a viral infection, herpes simplex.

The settlement includes payments for Martin O'Brien's family and was made without admission of liability.

In the same way that pre-Michelle Smith, the Irish Olympic swimming team used to hail a competition a success if none of them was drowned, let’s be honest, weren’t we glad when both the Queen and Obama got out of Ireland alive? Not that there was ever a serious threat to their respective healths while they were here, but there was always the fear that a member of the South Offaly-North Tipperary branch of Al Qaeda might attack him with a hurl or that that dissy-dent republicans might savage the Queen with a Turbot snatched from the shelves of the English Market. We all breathed a sigh of relief when their planes left the ground and rose into that part of sky that Cork radio presenters know as non-indictable international airspace out of our jurisdiction.

Kyne concerned at delay in Civil Registration Act review

Fine Gael’s Galway West Deputy Seán Kyne has expressed concerns at the delay in amending the Civil Registration Act to allow for the registration of the deaths of Irish people who die abroad. In May and June of 2010, the Galway-based Bring Them Home campaign group met with the then Minister for Social Protection, Éamon Ó Cuiv, who committed to a review so the legislation could be changed.

Future of Galway Airport now at ‘critical juncture’

Senator Fidelma Healy Eames believes the saving of Galway Airport “is now at a crucial juncture” and a lack of immediate action could lead to its demise. The future of the Airport has been subject to widespread speculation in recent months.

PSO funding worth €960,000 annually was withdrawn on the Galway to Dublin Aer Arann service and a value for money report on regional airports has also recommended the cessation of its annual operation subvention funding, worth €1.3 million a year. A decision on its future funding is due from Cabinet within the next two weeks, but the Fine Gael Senator is realistic about the possible investment the airport is likely to receive.

A young Galway-based film maker has produced one of the internet hits of 2011. Entitled 50 people one qustion-Ireland, it received 85,000 views within four days of being uploaded to the popular video sharing site, Youtube.

The video has been added to tens of thousands of Facebook pages all around the world, and has commanded newspaper coverage in New York, Netherlands, and Japan.
