GAFTV goes live on Monday

Filmmakers from across Ireland will be in Galway to ensure arts festival audiences receive up to the minute previews, news, and exclusive interviews through the online GAFTV.
Some 40 volunteers will be involved with GAFTV this year and their work can be viewed online daily at GAFTV.ie, which will begin with previews from Monday June 27 and run through until July 24.

A Newcastle man who, during an “alcohol rampage”, abusively damanded dole money from staff at a social welfare office and, after getting no joy, relieved himself by urinating on the exterior of the building in the presence of gardai was further remanded on continuing bail.
Stephen Rabbitte (24) with an address at 96 Inishannagh Park, Newcastle, Galway, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of threatening and abusive behaviour at Sandyvale Lawn, Headford Road, and later at St Augustine Street, on February 2, 2011. Charges for being intoxicated in a public place, obstruction, and failing to obey garda orders were withdrawn.

NUIG’s contribution to Galway’s Bike Week Festival was a huge success with many opting to cycle to work as part of the university’s Cycle to Campus Day. Galway's Bike Week Festival runs from June 18 to 26 and this year the week was launched in Galway with a mass cycle, a bike village and many other events around the city. As part of NUI Galway's contribution to the festival, the green campus committee organised a university-wide Cycle to Campus Day yesterday.

The CAO's latest figures for third level applications show that NUI Galway’s popularity among Leaving Certificate students as their first choice for university continues to grow for the third consecutive year. The university has seen a further increase of almost 10 per cent in the number of students selecting NUIG as their first choice institution through the change of mind and late application process. NUI Galway is now in the top two universities for growth in first preference applications through both application processes. Over the past three years, first preference applications for undergraduate degrees at NUI Galway have increased significantly as the university’s popularity continues to soar.

The launch will take place on Saturday July 2 from 12 midday to 8pm at Unit 3, Doughiska, Galway. A range of gluten free options including fresh cod, sausages, onion rings, curry sauce, and homemade cut chips will be served from 12 noon to 8pm on the day alongside their usual menu.

A committee has been formed to realise the project and to date it has secured 75 per cent of the funding. It is now asking local community members to offer donations towards securing the remaining €40,000.
