The Galway Chamber of Commerce is calling on the Government, and in particular the Minister of State for Local Government & Planning, to urgently review and upgrade the tier-level status of Galway City Council (currently Tier 5) to Tier 4 or higher. National funding allocations do not reflect the scale, growth and cost pressures facing Galway City and its business community.

Child safeguarding, communication breakdowns, and the future of the Corralea Court building took centre stage at the November Plenary Meeting of the Tuam Municipal District on Tuesday, November 11. Councillors voiced growing frustration at what they described as insufficient clarity from Government departments regarding the operation of the IPAS accommodation centre in the former hotel.

Cllr Shaun Cunniffe said councillors had been “very adamant” in seeking detailed information from the Department on child safeguarding arrangements, adding that assurances given earlier in the year had not been followed through. “We wanted to know exactly what the child safeguarding arrangements were. We were promised detail on that, and it still hasn’t come,” he said. “We did our duty. We weren’t sure what was happening. There are kids involved, but the information didn’t come back. It’s poor.”

Prison for woman who urinated in Garda van

A GERMAN mother of six had a one-month prison sentence imposed on her for urinating and spitting in a Garda van after her arrest for public drunkenness when her case came before Judge Fiona Lydon at Galway District Court. In addition she received a further two months for causing a disturbance at UCHG the following day.

The Court heard that on September 16 at 3.40pm, Nadine Falke, 13, St Jarlath’s Court, The Glebe, Tuam was found by Gardaí intoxicated at Eyre Square. She used foul and insulting language towards them and was arrested. While being transported in the Garda van she urinated in the vehicle and spat and it had to be forensically cleansed afterwards at a cost of €181.60.
