A DEFENDANT who is accused of refusing to pay a taxi fare of €211.80 when he arrived at Milltown, was strongly advised to get legal representation as he was warned a criminal conviction, if found guilty, could have serious consequences for him.
Kevin Amouzou, 58 Castlepark, Ballybane, appeared before Judge James Faughnan at Tuam District Court to face the charge of not paying the fare demanded by the taxi driver, Joseph Mills, on August 30 at Milltown.
Amouzou told the Judge that he worked for a sports retailer and the Judge warned him that he could lose his job if he receives a criminal conviction.
He was strongly advised to engage legal representation as such a conviction might not only impact on his employment, but might also affect travel plans. Judge Faughnan adjourned the case until the July 28 sitting to give the defendant an opportunity to consider his options.
The Court was not informed where the taxi journey originated, only the final destination at Milltown. It is estimated that a fare of €211.80 would normally cover a journey of 120 to 140km.
