Access audit needed to address Knocknacarra wheelchair issues

A city councillor has called on the council to carry out an access audit in the Knocknacarra area as soon as possible so that funding could be made available to alleviate the problems being faced daily by wheelchair users, as well as parents with prams and buggies.

Galway City West councillor Donal Lyons raised the issue of access for people with special needs on roads and footpaths in the west of the city at a recent meeting of Galway City Council. He also formally wrote to the council requesting an urgent access audit to be carried out.

Call for financial aid for protected structure owners

Councillors have called on Galway County Council to provide more information and financial assistance to the identified owners of properties added to the protected structures list.

At Monday’s meeting of the local authority, Cllr Tom McHugh (FG) told the chamber that he had received a number of representations in relation to the issue of protected structures and the letters received from the council. “They have concerns about what this means for their properties. We need to allay these concerns,” urged Cllr McHugh who added that in some cases maintenance of the properties has been minimal and would therefore require substantial repairs. He then called on the council to help owners struggling to carry out these repairs in the form of grant aid.

New county speed limits adopted

County councillors have adopted a new speed limits, set down by the Road Traffic Special Speed Limit County Galway Bye-Laws 2014, to be introduced across the county from May 8 next.

The new bye-laws were passed and adopted at this month’s Galway County Council meeting. While the majority of the changes involve reducing the speed limits, the road between Galway Airport and Ballintemple was increased from 60km/h to 80km/h, a change that was welcomed by Independent councillor for the Oranmore electoral area, Jim Cuddy.
