Council to apply for modern flood barriers at Toft Park

Galway City Council will soon be applying to the Office of Public Works (OPW) for funding to provide a modern flood barrier system which will be put in place, when necessary, in attempt to prevent severe flooding in the Toft Park and Lower Salthill areas.

There were a number of cars written off after being submerged in water in the Toft Park car park during the storm weather, while several businesses were also severely affected by flood waters in Lower Salthill. The extent of the damage prompted members of the public as well as representatives to call for a more permanent sustainable solution to be found.

Harry McGee, political correspondent with the Irish Times has been named as the most recent appointment to NUI Galway’s governing authority, Údarás na hOllscoile. Harry McGee is a native of Galway and an alumnus of NUI Galway, holding a BA (1987), H Dip in Journalism (1989) and an LLB (1993). He studied at King’s Inns and is a barrister. He worked in Galway with The Connacht Tribune before moving to Dublin where he worked with RTÉ, as Special Correspondent with the Sunday Tribune and as Editor of Magill.

Cllr Murphy calls for west to get ‘fair share’ of new ICT undergraduate places

An extra 1,250 information and communication technology (ICT) undergraduate places will be made available annually from 2014, according to Fine Gael city councillor Michelle Murphy who has called for a “fair share” of these undergraduate places to be made available in the west of Ireland.

“Many candidates currently in the market place in Galway have actually re-launched their careers by participating in career conversion courses, or returning to full time education, over the past two to three years to ensure they get on the ICT employment wagon when it comes to town,” said Cllr Murphy, who explained that 2,000 work permits will also be issued per year to ICT professionals with relevant skills in order to meet the demands of the industry, and there will be an increased focus on recent Irish emigrants and EEA nationals.

New Galway Clinic radiotherapy technology reduces treatment times

The Galway Clinic Radiotherapy Department treats some 500 patients a year for a range of cancers. The majority of cases are prostate and breast cancer, but the centre also treats brain, lung, rectum, gastric and gynaecological tumours, and delivers palliative treatments for symptoms such as pain.
