Return of funding needed to tackle abandoned horse problems

Thu, Sep 26, 2013

It costs Galway County Council €350 each time animal welfare staff round up a horse, according to officials who confirmed this week that funding for the control of horses has been reduced significantly, putting even extra pressure on an already strained service.

At Monday’s monthly meeting councillors were presented with the financial report for the period ending June 30 2013 which showed that there has been an over expenditure on animals welfare, mainly arising from the increased costs associated with the recovery of abandoned horses. Councillors were told that so far this year 250 animals have already been picked up.

The impact of a Mayo victory

Thu, Sep 19, 2013

Galway should brace itself next week for a variety of unexpected emotional responses from otherwise rational people. Grown men could burst into tears in the street, rip off their clothes and run naked through the Square; logical women might be seen muttering to themselves, staring at the skies, wondering how this thing has come to pass. Families could be torn apart from the demon drink; marriages ripped asunder as previously pleasant understandings become irreconcilable differences. In fact, one wonders if the Chamber of Commerce have made allowances for the fact that hundreds and hundreds of staff may not turn up for work, and indeed, may never be seen again, as they cast off the baggage of decades past. And this, the week after the camogie players of Galway slew all before them on the hallowed turf.

Elected members should not be bullied, says councillor

Thu, Sep 19, 2013

Elected councillors attempting to halt the privatisation of refuse collection should not be bullied by officials, according to city councillor Colette Connolly.

Cllr Connolly made the comments following Monday’s city council meeting which saw elected members vote to seek independent legal opinion in relation to a Section 140 motion. The Labour councillor said she is “aghast that the city manager continues to show such utter contempt for the elected members”, and there was no reason why Brendan McGrath could not have circulated the legal advice prior to the meeting.

City councillors to seek independent legal advice as bin row continues

Thu, Sep 19, 2013

Independent legal advice is being sought by city councillors who continue to plead with city manager Brendan McGrath not to continue with plans to privatise the household waste collection service.

At a special meeting of Galway City Council on Monday evening, a motion proposed by Cllr Colette Connolly was passed with eight votes for and five against calling for independent legal opinion regarding the invoking of a Section 140 motion by elected members and the consequences of elected members directing the city manager to retain the refuse service. However, remaining firm with his plans to privatise, Mr McGrath warned that the bidding process to find a private provider will continue and “run in parallel” while the second legal opinion is being sought.
