Cosmetic trends

Thu, Mar 24, 2011

If you ever want to know what the very latest trends in cosmetics are, swing by the MAC counter in Brown Thomas. New on counter at the minute is the Wonder Woman collection, complete in comic book style packaging. It includes the supersized mineralised skin finish, eyeshadows, lipsticks, and powder blushers. Readers of this column will not be at all surprised to know my favourite item in this collection is the Reflex Glitter, in pearl and bronze. Though a plain and simple girl in most ways, and already owning four Bobbi Brown shimmer brinks, I could not resist this glitter. I tend to think glitter has mystical powers and improves all circumstances. This one is unreal. It can be used over a creamy eye shadow to add dimension or over cream blush to highlight. The sparkles practically dance on the skin, I love it. If you are baring your shoulders you can dust it over the tops of your arms (when a MAC make up artist suggests you to go sparingly, you know you may have gone a bridge to far with it in the past).

Spring trends in lingerie available at Change

Wed, Mar 16, 2011

There are two big trends in lingerie and lounge wear this season — romanticism and graphic purity.

What better way to embrace spring than with lingerie in airy and softly polished fabrics. You will see romantic themes in bras and pyjamas with tranquil feminine colours, delicate floral prints, and embroideries reminiscent of bygone days. For those who prefer simple elegance over playful romanticism, you can choose from the variety of prints with pure and straight styling, or block colours, cleanly trimmed, while still feminine thanks to soft refined materials and hues.

Acupressure — needle free therapy helps energy flow freely

Wed, Mar 16, 2011

Acupressure is a Chinese method of healing that has been practised for some 3,000 years and which works on the meridians, energy channels that run in a network through the body. In a healthy body, the ‘chi’, or essential energy, flows freely and evenly through the meridians. When blockages occur, the body becomes unbalanced, chi is trapped, and disease occurs.

Cheaters’ guide to Brown Thomas

Thu, Mar 10, 2011

One shortcut that I take in Brown Thomas regularly (and you can too!) is that I will visit each counter and department, simply asking “what’s amazing here?” It is a true short cut to success. It will help if you can add, as a by the way, that you love the sophisticated seventies look, or that you are sticking to the sharp feminine lines of the Mad Men era, or that you are a pared down kind of girl, or more is more with you, whatever your style is, reveal it. Be specific but not close minded. Nothing is written in stone, especially when it comes to style. The experts on cosmetics and fashion can steer you down the right path to achieve your desired look. If you are unsure what the best look for you is, ask one of the stylists. It is a complimentary service and she will spend time with you to determine what works best. Then the fun starts. Sometimes what is amazing will not necessarily be what works for you, but it is fun to know what is current and may influence your aesthetic in other ways. Soak it all in. A cohesive(ish) theme tends to run through cosmetics and fashions for every season.

Ten steps to good health

Thu, Mar 10, 2011

1. Eat healthily. Try to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. When doing your grocery shop stock up on healthy snacks, such as rice cakes, celery, cucumber and low-fat cheese. Try to incorporate wholemeal foods, bread and pasta and low fat yoghurt into your diet, too. Avoid sugary and fried foods and salt as much as possible. Grill, bake, microwave but steer away from frying. Watch out for the hidden fats in creams and sauces as well.
