Week III
On Sunday morning June 15 1919, the editor of the Connacht Tribune, Tom ‘Cork’ Kenny (the grandfather of my colleague on this page), got a phone call from the police station in Clifden to say that two young men had landed on Derrygimla bog, close to the Marconi station, claiming they had just flown in from America. Tom immediately motored out to Clifden, and what must have sickened poor Lord Northcliff of the Daily Mail, who had offered £10,000 to the first aviator to fly across the Atlantic, Tom was the first journalist to interview the successful pilot, John Alcock, and his navigator, Arthur W Brown. He beat them all with a world exclusive story.

Hughes’ Pub, Woodquay
Thu, Jun 27, 2019
Sixty years ago yesterday, on June 26 1969, Michael Hughes opened his pub in Woodquay. Our photograph (which was taken in 1953) shows what it looked like before Michael took it over. It was known as Molly Greaney’s and that is the lady herself on the right. Next to her is her brother Tommy who worked as a rep for Dwyers of Cork. The next two men with caps are Brendan Noonan and his brother, and their father is the man with the hat. They were carpenters. The man in the foreground is Tommy O’Brien who worked with an oil company. We do not know who the two men in caps on the left were.

Thu, Jun 27, 2019
Is your child’s maths performance below par? Is it affecting his/her confidence and outlook? Is your child just a little bit at sea, or is maths a total minefield? As the school year draws to a close, is it time to put a schedule in place for September? And what about maths and the summer slide?
The importance of encouraging a positive view of mathematics in primary school cannot be over-emphasised. As students progress through the classes they are introduced to new concepts which build on previous learning and understanding. Therefore it is vital that children grasp each new concept and are given a chance to practise it and apply it before they move on. This helps students feel confident in their abilities and assured in the knowledge that they can forge ahead on this mathematical journey.

There’s one garden style I love to admire and love to design, but I’m not sure I could live with it in a ‘forever’ way myself – it’s the contemporary, minimalist style. I love these gardens and the sense of peace and calm they can bring when executed properly – the restrained use of planting and the adventurous use of materials and textures. But as anyone who follows me on Instagram and Facebook knows, I can’t resist colour, pattern and texture, and I love the constant changing of the seasons, new things and a regular freshening up of what’s around me.
