The very first thing you need to do when hunting for the perfect denim is to be clear about your body shape. You have to buy denims first for what you are, and only second what you want to achieve. Jeans are one item you cannot buy successfully on the recommendation of a friend. Unless you are identical twins, it is highly unlikely that what is perfect for one girl will be work at all for another. Whether you are long and leggy or small and petite, the perfect pair is waiting at the denim bar in Brown Thomas.

Santa will be returning to Dunsandle Castle, Kiltullagh, this December, along with Mrs Claus and their elves for Santa’s Castle 2011. This event, now in its third year, is gaining a reputation as one of Galway’s leading Christmas events.
Santa’s Castle is a fun experience for all the family, where both young and old can revel in the magic of Christmas. Ninety minutes of seasonal adventure begins when you and your family are greeted by the woodland elves, who lead you on a torch-lit procession through the atmospheric castle woods. When you arrive at the castle you are welcomed into Mrs Claus’s kitchen where there are songs, stories, and treats, before ascending the 15th century medieval spiral staircase to Santa’s great hall. Each child has a personalised visit with Father Christmas, and also receives an educational gift. The tour culminates with a trip to Santa’s workshop, where children can create their own Christmas cards and decorations with the help of Santa’s elves.

Goats Lane Café, what a great name for a café and so easy to remember. It is apparently the original name for the road down by the side of Kelly’s post office and shop in Clarinbridge. This new venture has just been opened in the last couple of weeks by Deirdre and Phyllis Flanagan and is an oasis of home cooked treats. Previously I have bought cakes, brownies, and breads from Deirdre and Phyllis at various markets in Kinvara, Oranmore, Clarinbridge, and Ardrahan, and often times, with the rain pouring down around them, I thought, fair play to them. No more setting up their tent and perhaps getting drenched while trying to bring their goodies to their customers.

When the Kilkenny essayist Herbert Butler came to write about the burning of Bridget Cleary in 1960 he acknowledged that Slievenaman was always known for its mysterious past. Looking across the Tipperary border from his fields, he described it as ‘a pale blue hump with the soft, rounded contours of ancient hills whose roughness have been smoothed away by time. Finn MacCool lived there as did Oisin and Oscar, and 50 beautiful maidens, who gave it its name The Mountain of Women.’ In Bridget Cleary’s time, it was also the home of Denis Ganey, the local herbal doctor, and a man respected and feared for his knowledge of fairylore. It was to this house that Michael Cleary ran to on the afternoon of Thursday March 14 1895. He pleaded for a cure for his wife whom he believed had been taken by the fairies, and replaced by a woman that was not the Bridget Boland he had married.
When he returned to his cottage at Ballyvadlea, with the hill of Tullowcossaun behind it, the house was full of people along with his sick wife. There was her father Patrick Boland, her aunt Mary Kennedy; her four cousins Patrick, Michael, James, and William Kennedy, William Aherne, and the man who first pronounced that Bridget was a fairy ‘changeling’, Jack Dunne.

1. Take charge of your time. If days just seem to slip away and it is often mid afternoon before you make any headway on your tasks then you are not in control. Begin by monitoring your time, this will help you pinpoint where any problems lie. Get a sheet of paper and make three columns with headings such as Time Started, Activity, and Time Taken.
