William Evans of Eton (1798-1877) was the drawing master of Eton College in England and was an accomplished artist who exhibited widely in London, Dublin, and Paris. He made a number of visits to the west of Ireland in 1835 and 1838 where he produced many studies and finished watercolours, mostly of Counties Galway and Mayo, a mixture of picturesque landscapes, market and street scenes, and what might be called peasant structures and peasant portraits.

When OLBC was founded in 1940, the Government provided no out of school education for young people. There was a great need for social and recreational facilities. Such activity was virtually non-existent in the working class areas of Bohermore, Shantalla, The Claddagh, and ‘The West’. The critical core of the club was (and is) its generic youth club which met (and still meets) several evenings a week. The primary aim in those days was to show the boys ways and means of securing their own destiny.

It is hard to believe that president John F Kennedy’s visit to Galway only lasted one hour. It was timed with military precision and yet JFK seemed remarkably relaxed and enjoying himself thoroughly throughout. He landed by helicopter in the Sportsground where he was met by the mayor, Paddy Ryan, a group of schoolgirls from the Mercy National School all dressed in green white and gold, some members of the American legion, and a crowd of enthusiastic onlookers.

A new era of design
It is quite well known that Ireland has no formal body to support and nurture the fashion industry, to provide the platform and opportunities that the British Fashion Council does for the UK, for example. Instead, we are fortunate to have some brands that recognise the need to encourage our up and coming talent from our amazing design colleges, and assist them to develop into the next phase of their career. One such brand is Persil, and for the last 14 years it has sponsored the annual Irish Fashion Awards, to identify and reward our country’s new design talent.

Mexican food. I had no great love for it as a cuisine until a visit to Wahaca in London a few years back convinced me of its possibilities. Ex-MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers oversees branches of her popular canteen-style eatery throughout London, it won me over with the authentic and flavoursome fare, even though the heat was certainly dialled down for the English palate. In Ireland, we mostly get what passes for Mexican food from a yellow box in the supermarket. When prepared, it often appears on the plate to have already been eaten by someone else. This is not the case at Boojum, the new restaurant on Spanish Parade, here it is all aromatic, fresh, and zesty, a return to its street food roots.

Thu, Jun 27, 2013
In the mid 1940s a trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels about the English countryside of north-east Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire took Britain by storm. They were written by Flora Thompson, who graphically recalled her childhood, and the many characters in her young life, in Lark Rise (1939), Over to Candleford (1941), and Candleford Green (1943). She perfectly identified the period as a pivotal point in rural history; a time when the quiet, close-knit and peaceful rural culture, governed by the seasons, began a transformation. Agricultural mechanisation, better communications and urban expansion, turned a rural idyll into the homogeneity that we generally have today. The books inspired a recent TV series, and were immensely popular. It reminded a new generation what had been lost.

A meeting of the residents of the Salthill area was held in the Pavilion Ballroom in June 1934 for the purposes of considering the necessity of erecting a church in Salthill. They unanimously expressed the urgency of building one to cater for the religious needs of about 300 families representing approximately 400 residents and a large number of summer visitors. At that time there were about 200 families from the Bishop’s Gate to Rockbarton and there was provision made for the building of close on 100 houses.
