Galway Food Festival highlights

Thu, Apr 02, 2015

The launch of the programme for the fourth Galway Food Festival was held on Monday March 9 in one of Galway’s coolest new hangout spots, Bite Club. Celebrating Galway as a food destination, the festival strives to highlight the importance of food provenance and sustainability. Many of the great and the good of the Galway food scene were present — chefs, producers, restaurateurs, educators, and food writers. One of the best things about the launch being in Bite Club was the refreshments — spicy tacos, hot wings, and poitin slushies were the order of the day. It certainly made a difference to the usual smoked salmon on brown bread and a glass of pinot gris. A huge amount of organising goes into the festival, with the committee members and many others giving freely of their time and expertise to make it a success. More than 60 food related events will take place in hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops throughout Galway city and county during Easter weekend. Fifty shades of kale, the Twelve Apostles, Cava on the Corrib, and Easter-themed afternoon teas are just some of the fun activities planned.

Daniel O’Connell - A man not without flaws

Thu, Apr 02, 2015

It is said that all political careers end in failure. The great Daniel O’Connell’s final slide into earthly oblivion was heralded by the now familiar sight of journalists descending on his estate at Derrynane, Co Kerry, the year before he died. They had scented a whiff of scandal, and like today, doorstepped him.

The Presentation Sisters, 200 years in Galway

Thu, Mar 26, 2015

In 1815, the warden of Galway Dr French went to Kilkenny to ask sisters of the Presentation Order to return with him to Galway to found a convent here. A Reverend Bartholomew Burke has left a fund of £4,800 for the purpose. Three sisters arrived here in October of that year. They moved into a house in Kirwan’s Lane temporarily, and from there to Eyre Square. On March 25th, 1819, they moved to a house in poor condition that had originally been built as a Charter School and which would become known as the Presentation Convent. The following year they opened their school adjacent to the convent.

Spring has arrived and with it the Connacht Hotel, on the Dublin Road in Renmore, has launched its new spring/summer bar lunch menu.

This new menu is full of all the culinary delights that the regular lunch diners at the Connacht Hotel have grown to expect, and more. Head chef Regis Herviaux has carefully planned the menu to ensure that visitors to the hotel can sample the best ingredients that Galway’s suppliers have to offer. Changing daily are fish, stew, casserole dishes, and pie of the day, which are popular choices. There is also a large selection of starters and salads, mains such as chicken curry, lasagne, Kentucky style chicken, and pork belly. Some lighter main options can be chosen from the sandwich menu, or diners can select a salad as a main.

Adventurous dining at The Salthill Hotel

Thu, Mar 19, 2015

That the Salthill Hotel has only recently been awarded four star status came as a surprise to me. The lofty foyer and comfortable reception would not be out of place in Kensington. Any weddings or events I have attended there have always been to a very high standard. Overlooking the Promenade, with views of Galway Bay and the Clare Hills, this elegant hotel features an exceptional leisure centre. But the official announcement was granted by Fáilte Ireland, that the Salthill Hotel has achieved the four star status, only on February 12 2015. This accomplishment is testament to the hard work of the staff, coupled with the substantial investment by the Byrne family in the property in the last few years.

Cobblers and shoemakers

Thu, Mar 19, 2015

The 1651 map of Galway shows a Shoemaker’s Tower located in what is the Eyre Square Shopping Centre today. Shoemaker’s Lane, or Bóithrín na Sudairí, the road of the shoemakers or the tanners, was where Buttermilk Walk is today. Shoemaking was always an important business but the individual shoemaker is a rare breed now, instead you associate the craft with factories like Dubarry in Ballinasloe.

How artists changed Britain’s perception of the Great Hunger

Thu, Mar 19, 2015

Although the Great Irish Famine, which devastated Ireland in the 1840s and early 1850s, happened at a time when photography was only in its experimental stage, we still have vivid images of the appalling suffering that the vast majority of the people endured. A suffering that was heightened by systematic neglect by government, the total absence of a comprehensive humanitarian plan of relief, and the law of the land which only supported the rights of landlords.*

CLIMB programme at Tuam Cancer Care Centre helps children come to terms with a parent’s cancer diagnosis

Thu, Mar 19, 2015

Cancer affects a whole family, not just the person who is ill. Many parents dealing with a cancer diagnosis acknowledge they do not know how to talk to their children about cancer. This breakdown in communication not only heightens the stress and fears of the children, it isolates them and prevents them from being an active member of the family. Participation in the CLIMB programme helps to support communication of these complex feelings, increases the children’s knowledge about cancer, and improves communication between parents and children.
