GTI to host HeadstART pop-up end of year art exhibition by art portfolio preparation students

Galway Technical Institute presents the artists and designers of the future in their 2023 pop-up end of year student art exhibition. As the name HeadstART suggests, students from the Art Portfolio Preparation QQI Level 5 programme have a great head start on graduating from the programme at GTI, where they are equipped with the skills and art and design understanding that supports them in successfully progressing to a range of further education or third level opportunities.

The exhibition’s opening reception will take place at GTI from 6.30pm on Thursday, May 18 and GTI will welcome ATU contemporary art lecturer and artist, Katharine West, as guest speaker to formally open this year’s show. This pop-up exhibition will be on view to the public until 11am on Friday, May 19.

The Jesuits in Galway

There is historical evidence to show that the Jesuits were already in the city in the early 1600s, combining the work of ministry and education. In 1645, the Order set up their first college in Galway on Lower Abbeygate Street, where Powell’s shop is today. They were forced to leave the city by the Cromwellians, but they came back. They were forced to leave the city by the Williamites, but they came back. They had to close their Galway residence in 1768 due to a lack of manpower but they were persistent and came back again, and in 1859 they took over a house on Prospect Hill and the following year, set up a college in Eyre Square.
