In 1951 Hastings Elliott Jephson was working in the ESB in Galway when he had the idea of setting up a hockey club in the city. He and his friend George Bevis decided to see if there was merit in this notion, so they simply went from door to door around town asking people if they would have any interest in playing the game of hockey.

The Galway Expess was one of the first local newspapers to notice that the increasing numbers of people succumbing, some very suddenly, to the so called Spanish ‘Flu that swept across the world in the early summer of 1918, was ‘virulently infectious’. It speculated that it first reached Ireland through Belfast, and in many cases ‘entire households have been seized,’ industries have been closed, and schools ‘although children suffer less than adults, they spread infection’, have also been closed. ‘Sudden collapses are the most striking feature, the victim being struck down almost immediately.’

Aoife Ni Eochaidh, chartered physiotherapist, provides face to face, phone, and video call physiotherapy for pelvic floor muscle treatment for bladder and bowel incontinence from her clinic in Suite 14, Bon Secours Consultant Clinic in Renmore. She also treats sexual dysfunction, prolapse, post-natal pelvic conditions, and osteoporosis. People can choose to have their pelvic physiotherapy consultation by regular phone call, Zoom, WhatsApp, etc, or to attend in person. Patients can get a referral from their GP or self-refer.

Most Irish health insurance companies provide some cover for pelvic physiotherapy and, if needed, they provide some cover for pelvic physiotherapy electrotherapy devices. Physiotherapy being an essential service, the clinic remains open during the pandemic, but is strictly adhering to Government guidelines. Letters are issued to patients travelling to the clinic to attend appointments.

CAO applicants total more than seventy nine thousand at close of normal deadline
