In his interesting biography of Éamon de Valera,* Diarmuid Ferriter wrote that in December 2000 gardaí seized 24 love letters from de Valera to his young wife Sinéad, which were being advertised for auction by Mealy’s of Castlecomer. It was believed that the letters were stolen in the mid 1970s from the de Valera family home. The owners who had bought them in the UK some years previously in an effort to ensure their return to Ireland, were unaware that they were stolen.

International early childhood experts to address GMIT virtual conference on outdoor play

GMIT Mayo and the Children and Young People’s Services Committee, Mayo, will host a two-day virtual conference on March 26 and 27 on the theme of outdoor play, titled “Leave No Stone Unskipped”, for educators, parents, students, researchers and policy makers.

The event aims to highlight the value of free, unstructured, play outdoors and will be addressed by leading international experts in early childhood education and care such as Angela Hanscom (USA), author of Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children; Tim Gill (UK), independent scholar, advocate, and consultant on childhood; Áine Bird (Ireland), Burrenbeo Trust, Co Galway (since 2012); and Tristan Gooley (UK), bestselling author and “natural navigator” who set up his natural navigation school in 2008.

Some of the prettiest, most dainty flowering plants belong in the woodland category – think of native bluebells for instance – spectacular as carpets stretching underneath trees, but individually exquisite when viewed close up. Our native bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, needs lots of space to thrive and doesn’t particularly work well with other plants – so is perhaps best kept for larger gardens. The cultivated or Spanish bluebell, Hyacinthoides hispanica, should be used with caution – a sturdier, less elegant bluebell, it’s invasive and inclined to hybridise with the more delicate natives so I would avoid it.
