No holidays for over a year but west is still fave for majority of people

It has been well over a year since most of the people living in Ireland have taken a much-needed holiday. According to new research commissioned by Europcar Mobility Group Ireland, 52% of Connacht people have not taken a break since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The research shows that 44% of those in Connacht took a staycation in Ireland last year, but the length of stay was relatively short with the majority (40%) taking between two and three days.

The changing face of Salthill

This 1948 photograph was taken from the old RIC barracks which was opposite the Banba Hotel . The bit of a wall you can see in the immediate foreground was part of ‘The Lazy Wall’. There was a concrete seat running along the other side of this wall and it was there people known as the ‘Fámairí’ used to congregate, people mostly from farming families. When they had the harvest in, they would come to Salthill on holiday and often meet with the same people as last year. They would sit here and gossip, smoke their dúidíns and sometimes paddle in the sea beside them.

Various long-term arrangements were made, but in effect it allowed Germany off the hook for the monetary compensation it had agreed to pay for its responsibility in starting the war. Germany was now free to rebuild its own economy. This was a very importance conference attended by the world press, among whom was Clare Sheridan.
