Ireland on alert for flying ant invasion

Thu, Jul 21, 2016

As a result of the early and warm start to the summer, Rentokil is advising that the annual nuptial flight of ants is imminent. An ant invasion is likely to be seen over the coming days and weeks as flying ants make their annual return.

The close, humid, weather conditions currently being experienced provide the perfect ambiance for garden ants to start their ‘nuptial flight’, or mating on the wing. The ants appear suddenly as they leave the colony together in one coordinated flight, which is also synchronised with the flight of ants from neighbouring colonies.

Be Dazzled by Dahlias

Thu, Jul 21, 2016

Dahlias were such a revelation for me when I first got interested in gardening. I could not believe that the brown, wizened, dried up tuber in the packet would produce the dazzling blooms printed on the cover in just a few short months. Armed with some helpful advice from the sales lady (for instance which was the right way up!) I gave them a try and I was thrilled with the results – they’re brilliant plants for beginner gardeners because you get such magical results so quickly – within a few months of planting the tuber you can get dozens of fabulous blooms.

Athrú 2016 inaugural conference to take place in Galway next week

Thu, Jul 14, 2016

Leading female chefs and restaurateurs from across Ireland are coming together in Galway next week for a culinary think-in and conference on gender roles within professional kitchens and throughout the hospitality sector. Athrú 2016, empowering women in the culinary arts in Ireland, is a two day conference and workshop with the goal of establishing a working Irish female chef database that would be available or suitable for judging, media, or to provide a female voice and point of view.

Athrú 2016 is attracting international female culinary heads such as Maria Canabal, president of Parabere Forum - Improving Gastronomy with women's vision. Speaking ahead of the Athrú 2016 Ms Canabal said: “Currently, it's obvious that women are under-represented in the food and hospitality industry. At the same time — and this might not be a coincidence — society has become increasingly distrustful of the food industry. Women's voices need to be heard and their talents deployed, so that we can boost confidence in the food sector, and construct a vision of the future based on values of sustainability and equal opportunity. If society, and the food and wine industry, is to evolve towards greater sustainability, greater equality, stronger growth, and increased social progress, women must be able to take their rightful place.”

‘Have you news of my boy Jack?’

Thu, Jul 14, 2016

Such were the demands on many young men, not motivated by any political ideal, or heroic pressure, to fight for their king and country in 1914, but were driven by the sense of advtenture and excitement, that war often evokes in the hearts of young men, that they queued in their thousands to answer the call to arms. If unsuccessful, due to some physical deficiency (although medical check-ups were usually just a formality), family often used its influence to gain admission to the armed forces.

Summer in the Vegetable Garden

Thu, Jul 14, 2016

At this time of year the kitchen garden is in full swing with warmer, longer days allowing edible crops to mature and ripen. There’s still lots of work to do though to keep your plot productive and ensure a succession of edibles right through the summer months. If you’re lucky enough to have a designated kitchen garden with raised beds, brick paths and maybe even south facing walls for ripening fruit, you’ll have room to grow pretty much anything you like and lucky neighbours probably benefit from plenty of edible presents just now!

The Lazy Lawn Lover

Fri, Jul 08, 2016

Lawn mowing can seem a never-ending task at this time of year. I suppose the rain responsible for our lush forty shades of green is what encourages the grass to grow like Usain Bolt sprinting towards an Olympic record. Imagine if you could just press a button and close the roof like they do on Wimbledon’s Centre Court....

John Keogh’s, it’s a keeper

Thu, Jul 07, 2016

To my mind, there are three levels of food in Irish pubs. At one end is the traditional pub, where your only dining decision is whether to have the cheese and onion or salt and vinegar. And then there is proper pub grub, comforting soups, tasty sandwiches, and old favourites like bangers and mash or lasagne, usually in overly generous portions. At the other extreme of the scale are the ones who take themselves very seriously, where you can expect such delights as 'roasted marrow bones with curried clams in a grilled octopus reduction'.
