Summer Time.....and the Trimming is Easy

Fri, Aug 05, 2016

We like our hedges in these parts. Maybe it’s because a healthy green hedge is such an attractive backdrop for more colourful garden inhabitants – or maybe it’s the sense of enclosure it gives, the sense that our home is our castle and by enclosing it with a wall of green, it marks out the boundaries of our territory and somehow makes the space more our own. A well chosen and well maintained hedge can certainly do these things, as well as giving us shelter from prying eyes and chilly winds, so it’s no wonder they are a fixed feature in many of our gardens.

The Western Hotel, a hidden gem

Wed, Aug 03, 2016

The Western Hotel is something of a conjuring trick. On one side the frontage opens into an elegant Georgian townhouse hiding some modern comfortable rooms. Through the other entrance door is a small traditional pub. It is something of a surprise to find a spacious restaurant tucked away behind it, complete with its own bar and function room.

Right in the heart of Galway city, The Western Hotel certainly has an enviable location. It is in close proximity to the bus and railway station, just a short stroll away. There is a taxi rank very near the door and all main bus routes leave from here. Flanked all around by high profile shops, restaurants, and bars, it is at the centre of a hive of activity, less than a minute walk from Eyre Square. Best of all, this is a white tablecloth place without the white tablecloth price.

The turf market at the Claddagh

Wed, Aug 03, 2016

This photograph of the turf market at the Claddagh, near Wolfe Tone Bridge, was taken by the journalist Lillian Bland in 1908. This market used to take place regularly as farmers, mostly from the Barna/Furbo area, sometimes even Spiddal, would bring their cartloads of beautifully stacked turf to town. They were hoping to barter or sell their produce and then do their shopping in town. They often carried loads of hay, sometimes loose, sometimes tied, and large cans of milk, also for sale. There was a weighbridge on the other side of the cottages in our photograph which was often used in these transactions.

‘The old lady was a holy terror’

Wed, Aug 03, 2016

Ireland’s greatest short story writer is probably the late Frank O’Connor (1903-1966). Born in Cork city, his autobiography An Only Child (1961) is ironically a celebration of his vivacious but fastidious mother, and their survival from his alcoholic, and at times brutal, father.

O’Connor was blessed to have had a brilliant teacher, Daniel Corkery, at Cork’s renowned North Mon school, who encouraged his learning Irish and to write.

Scented Plants for Summer

Scented Plants for Summer
Have you ever noticed how a particular flower scent can bring you back to your childhood? Perfume is such a powerful way of triggering memories of someone close to us or somewhere special we have been to. For me, the scent of roses instantly brings my much-loved grandmother into my mind - she grew them skilfully for so many years and one of the most precious pictures in my mind is of her snipping stems in the kitchen and arranging them in cut glass vases. This is just one of the ways that our gardens keep us in touch with people who are close to us.
