I think ornamental grasses are probably an acquired taste. When I first started gardening myself, I was definitely drawn to anything that flowered, and like a child in a sweet shop, the more flowers the better, and the bigger and brighter they were, the more I liked them. It took a while for me to appreciate the part played by foliage in the scheme of things, not to mention form, shape and structure, and that’s no bad thing – it’s all part of the wonderful journey of discovery that accompanies an entry into the great gardening world.

Ireland West Airport has welcomed the news that Aer Lingus will resume operations on its hugely popular London Gatwick service on December 18 in time for the busy Christmas period. The service will return on a phased basis initially ahead of a planned full resumption of services in March 2021.
This comes as welcome news for the west and north west of Ireland following a suspension of the service for over 18 months as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Gatwick service has been an ever present service at the airport since its commencement in 2009 and is a hugely important one from both a business, diaspora and tourism perspective, providing critically important connectivity not just with the London market but as a gateway from the west of Ireland to Europe, with London Gatwick offering a wide range of international connections.

The 309 Connemara emigrants, selected by their local clergy as suitable for a new life in America, arrived at Boston June 14 1880, 11 days after departure from Galway Bay on the SS Austrian, an Allen Line ship. The settling of ‘The Connemaras’, as they became known, was a new venture prompted by a Liverpool priest, Fr Patrick Nugent renowned for his ‘philantropic and truly patriotic exertions to alleviate the social conditions of his fellow countrymen in England’; and Archbishop John Ireland, of St Paul, Minnesota, who was already settling thousands of Irish Catholics who were trapped in the ghettoes of New York and elsewhere, on rich prairie lands.

This building was designed by a Mr Farquarson around the year 1812. It has a three storey façade. The bays on the ground floor are articulated by paired fluted ionic pilasters while on the first floor, there are round-headed windows with moulded architraves which are flush with the wall surface and on the second floor segmented–headed windows similarly treated. The exterior has been preserved unchanged since it was built and is one of the most attractive corners in Galway, complemented by the rounded corner of what used to be McNamara’s and the elegant corner of what used to be Dillon’s.
