On September 3, 1939 at 11am, many Galwegians listened to the British prime minister’s broadcast declaring war on Germany. Very early the following morning, the following dramatic radio message came through to the Harbour Office. “Norwegian Motor Vessel Knute Nelson picked up 450 shipwrecked people, proceeding Galway. Due tomorrow morning, Tuesday 5th. Please arrange tender for landing same. Also notify pilot on Aran Islands. Please have medical supplies ready, From Master, September 4th”.

Gregory stayed at the Algonquin Hotel, on 44th Street, a few blocks from the Maxine Elliott Theatre where JM Synge’s play The Playboy of the Western World, opened on Monday November 27 1911. This was the Abbey Theatre’s first tour of America, and it was much anticipated. But its opening night was brought to a standstill by riotous and disruptive behaviour by a yahoo Irish element, who objected to its depiction of Irish womanhood. The play continued only after the police dragged off the worst offenders to jail.

Progressive pelvic floor muscle training is recommended as a first line treatment for incontinence (CG171 NICE Guideline 2016). Two thirds of women with any type of incontinence who have pelvic floor muscle training see improvements or cure, with 75 per cent of women reporting resolution of symptoms such as episodes of incontinence (National Institute of Research doi:10.33310/signal-000702). That is, two out of three women will be cured of incontinence with pelvic floor muscle training.

Scoil Náisiúnta Leitir Mealláin, is among six schools nationwhide selected to participate in Your Gallery at School 2022 at the National Gallery of Ireland. Following a successful programme in 2021, the gallery will bring art to classrooms across the country once again this year, thanks to continued support from global aircraft leasing company SMBC Aviation Capital.
Other schools selected to take part are St Colmcille's Primary School, Templemore, Co Tipperary; Mount Sion CBS Secondary School, Waterford city; St Brigid's and St Patrick's National School, Drogheda, Co Louth; Enniscorthy Community College, Co Wexford; and St Paul's Special School, Cork.
