A medieval castle in Quay Street

Blake’s Castle is a medieval urban fortified town house at the bottom of Quay Street which was built c1470 with single bay ground and first floors and a two-bay second floor. It has a flat roof with a crenelated parapet with a projecting machicolation on supporting corbels on the top floor above the entrance. This was an opening at the parapet through which defenders could drop material such as boiling water or hot pitch down on would-be attackers. It was built with coursed roughly dressed limestone rubble walls with square headed window openings to the upper floors.

For those looking to progress to higher education, GCC's courses often serve as stepping stones, designed to help students achieve the necessary points to gain entry into university or improve employment prospects with necessary qualifications. This pathway is beneficial for students who may not have achieved their desired results in the traditional Leaving Certificate exams or an opportunity to sample new vocational areas. There are no CAO points required to apply, and you can convert your results from the course, up to 390 points (more for science courses) to apply for more than 1,200 CAO courses that will accept a QQI award for progression to universities in Galway and nationwide. GCC's Level 6 courses give direct access to some second-year courses in ATU. The college maintain strong links with local university access offices through information talks and sessions on progression, organised by GCC's guidance counsellor.

This was the second year Coláiste an Chreagáin’s science and engineering students were involved in the VEX Robotics school’s competition (hosted by ATU and sponsored by Boston Scientific). The competition is the culmination of months of hard work by students designing, building, trouble-shooting, and coding their robot – “Louise”. The school’s robotic club ran by science teacher Ms O’Dea, encourages and supports the development of future engineers and scientists.
