I’m lucky enough to work from home, that is when I’m not being blasted by Atlantic gales, or lashed with rain on a site as I’m taking measurements and photographs in preparation for starting a garden design. As anyone whose office is in their home will tell you, this has upsides and downsides. One of the upsides is being able to snatch five or ten minutes in the garden at lunchtime if the weather is at all favourable. Today I had a chance to do just that, and it set me up for the rest of the afternoon. The sky was blue, the bright orange nasturtiums were blazing cheerfully along the fence and I could feel a soft breeze coming in from the coast – it was so refreshing and such a good way to clear the head.

The reduction in day light hours can make you feel less active and more tired, and many of us will have a tendency to eat more. For some, however, this natural loss of energy and enthusiasm with the change of season is far too strong. When this happens you may be suffering from Seasonal Affected Disorder (S.A.D) or the winter blues.

I’m Dudley Van Niekerk from Oranmore Co Galway and I’m a Big Airs Extreme Kiteboarder, owner and instructor at Rush Kitesurfing in Galway. I have lived in Ireland for almost 20 years and have spent the last 18 years in Galway. I'm also a hypnotherapist and a personal trainer. I have broken the Irish Big Airs Kitesurfing record twice in the last year and am the current national holder of the big airs record at a staggering 18,7m high. I'm an Ambassador for Cabrinha Kiteboarding, which is probably the worlds top kitesurfing brand. I love everything about Galway, the cool vibe, the awesome craft beer we have, the people and especially the fantastic prevailing South West winds we get here make kitesurfing truly amazing here. I’ve kited all over the world and I have to say that the spots we have in Galway to kite are world-class in every way and that includes deepest darkest winter. I wouldn’t wont to live anywhere else in the world. Galway Rocks.

Now that the dust is settling from all that back-to-school excitement, the reality sets in. Before you reach for the old reliable 'hang sangwidge' and 'cheese strings', here's a suggestion that might make this morning chore a little easier.

A great place to start supporting heart health through the diet is by focusing on increasing omega 3, which has been found to improve numerous heart disease risk factors.
