Sheridan’s to host Ireland’s first Fiction Slam

POETRY SLAMS, where poets recite works from memory and deliver them in a theatrical style, have been taking place for years, but a new phenomenon is coming to town - The Fiction Slam.

Galway will introduce people to this new style of literary event when the Over The Edge fiction slam takes place on Friday October 16 at 8pm in Sheridan’s Wine Bar.

The featured reader will be the Dublin based writer and performer Mia Gallagher. Her debut novel HellFire won the Literature Award in the Irish Tatler’s Women of the Year 2007 list while Joe O’Connor has described it as “a novel of many pleasures”. Her short stories have won the START short fiction award.

Those who want to take part in the fiction slam should e-mail [email protected] or text their name to 087-6431748. The first nine fiction writers to do so will be guaranteed a place. Three additional places will be available on the night. The first three to make it to Sheridan’s and give their names to MC Kevin Higgins will be accepted.

All participants should bring two pieces of their own fiction. The time limit is five minutes. Extracts from longer stories are admissible. Stories do not have to be memorised. The slam will be judged by audience members. The prize is a bottle of wine.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
