The staff at Galway Rural Development have continued working throughout the Covid-19 pandemic to serve community groups and individuals in County Galway. Indeed, GRD has been at the forefront of the county’s efforts, from grocery and medication collection to meals on wheels and related services.

GRD has also maintained its core education and training function through SICAP – the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme. Online training has become a necessary part of that function, but also an opportunity for people to gain additional qualifications which will prepare them to return to work or be job ready.

There has been a rapid shift in students’ lives from “the norm” to one of uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic which is impacting people all over the world. The pandemic has caused increased levels of stress, anxiety, and fear for individuals and communities. Students are experiencing a number of difficulties dealing with the many layers created by Covid-19. While efforts are being taken to contain the spread of Covid-19, which is critical at this point, there are a number of concerns and issues being raised psychologically for people and in particular students. Leaving Cert students are dealing with a disruption to their typical way of learning and a level of uncertainty surrounding achieving their goals and aspirations.

NUI Galway will host a virtual Open Scholarship Week (OSW2020) to showcase the importance of research and education that is accessible to everyone. The event will take place online from May 11 to 15.

Open Scholarship is a global movement towards research and educational practices that are collaborative and transparent. The aim is to make research and educational resources such as publications, data, research outputs, and teaching and learning resources, publicly available as early as possible, as well as actively encouraging participation in the research process by the general public and co-creation of knowledge.

Leaving Certificate students considering attending third level in the autumn will have given some consideration to financial implications; if they haven’t, then their parents probably have. It may take time to apply for scholarships and/or grants, and you could take this opportunity to explore potential financial supports which could be available to support you when studying in third level. The Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is certainly an opportunity for many, along with specific support available directly from your third level institution of choice.
